Increasing Conversion on a Webstore - What would affiliates want?

    Hi everyone,

I've been reading around here and I'm determined to get our website to the top of clickbank and get a gravity above 100 - but we've got a LONG way to go :)

I don't want to break the rules on self promotion and really do want advice rather than to just plug our site (also there would be little point now as it is not converting very well) so I won't link there but here is our situation:

We run a large webstore selling self help audio products - we currently have 150+. The problem is that this is a website we bought from someone and have re-developed it. For the last 3+ years all of the audio was available to play for free (and was monetarized by advertising), we have now re-developed the site and hooked it to clickbank so people can now pay to download all of the products. But since the history of the site has been 100% free we have kept the free online audio player (so far).

All of the traffic it gets currently comes from "free + keyword" type keywords and it gets a lot of repeat use because of this free element too so we are hesitant to just axe it completely..

But we own other webstores and regularly see 4% conversions. We were expecting a 2% conversion straight away on the re-launch of this new webstore and to be able to increase it to 3%+ pretty soon, but it is only converting at 0.5%... pretty much because of this free element.

I'd love some advice on what you would do to increase conversion as we want to really promote the site on clickbank but can't until we improve the natural conversion rate.

This last week we have added a popup and given away an eBook and free album and this has tripled our subscribers and increased the conversion rate to this 0.5% level but we need to do more, and here are our current options:

    1. Simply axe the free element and ONLY let people pay to download the albums. Based on our experience with other webstores this would eventually lead to a conversion rate above 3%. If possible we would like an alternative method, as I mentioned above all of the current traffic is coming because of this free element and we would like to find some way to make this work and try something slightly different.

    2. Develop a 1st listen free system - i.e. after 10 minutes the free player cuts out and forces either:
    - people to signup to our newsletter to continue listening (will increase subscriptions, but essentially it is still free)
    - to only able to listen for a few minutes a day and offers them a chance to enter a recurring billing contract per week / month to keep listening.

2.b. Not give any free access to the audio player, but only let people access it if they pay to use it. Possibly a $4.97 initial charge for the first month and then a higher price going forward.

(with any of these paid subscription models we are worried as it is new territory for us and we don't know if it is a harder sell to offer a subscription, or to just sell individual album downloads like we are used to. Or also that people may just buy into this and not buy any downloads and hence not repeat buy, orbuy larger packages like we know can happen - and if this is the case we would need a lot more regular paid subscribers to make real healthy profit)

    3. To axe the free audio player and instead develop the newsletter into more of a "club" where we would give them a free album every month perhaps, and upsell them related albums and packages at a discounted rate.

I'd really appreciate your input and suggestions, I know you'll probably say "make a 1 page long copy sales letter" and I do understand the power of this, and this is something we will do in the future, but our expertise is webstores and we know we can make it work, we would just like some advice on what clickbank affiliates would consider best / think will work and get them onboard as we really want to make it run by affiliate based traffic from clickbank (but don't have any clickbank experience).

This post is getting a bit long, I would love your feedback, and I am all ears for other suggestions.

    Many thanks,
    Dan

You can do what the antivirus vendors do. Offer a limited edition freebie then offer upgrades at re-registration. This does nothing for affiliates however.

Thanks, but yes, the whole idea is that we want a solution which affiliates will like and want to get on board - we want the primary source of our traffic to be coming from affiliates within 3-6 months time.
