Increase your traffic by creating a custom 404 error page

404's are not about increasing traffic. They are used to tell the visitor the page they are looking isn't available - either has been deleted or its a mistyped URL.

The custom 404 helps keep those visitors on your site, like you said.

 

The custom 404 pages are used to give a friedly response to surfers. So even he type a wrong URL he can still access the main options from your site.

I don't think that you can increase traffic using custom 404 pages, but for sure you will give your surfers a professional aproach to this issue.

It was a rhetorical question, because the OP titled the post "Increase your traffic by creating a custom 404 error page" and I thought he might have some secret tips he's not revealing

Maybe a way to get Google to index your 404 pages. Or a "cool looking 404 page" directory...

 

The idea is that without a custom 404 page - just the default browser/host 404 page - traffic that comes across it would in a lot of cases just leave your site, thus resulting in a loss of traffic. However, with these improved custom 404 pages, you stand a better chance at directing those visitors back to your site, thus increasing your traffic in a sense.
