Hi all If I check for incoming links on my site with google it shows a few and a couple are links from my actual site. ie www.mydomain.co.uk/about.html links to www.mydomain.co.uk If I check the same on a competitor he can have upto 20-30 links coming from his/her site. Ive looked at his/her pages but nothing looks different ie home page link and company name link to his url. (the usual) So what is google after in the page to make it see it as a link to the main page. All my pages link back to the main domain index page. This in my eyes is why the competitor is higher in google than me even though we have about the same propper incoming links and not incoming from within. I hope this makes sense. Morly
The easier way to discuss this is just to talk about internal links and external links. Google does in fact use internal links to a page as part of their PR calculation. Remember that the backlink lookup in Google normally only list pages with PR4 or higher. But if you are concerned about whether or not Google is seeing these internal links there are several thing to examine. 1. Has google cached your internal pages? If so then they at least know the page exists. 2. How is your navigation or internal linking structure set up. If it uses javascript exclusively Google may not be able to crawl these links so in fact may not know they are there and of course never give any page credit for having the internal link pointing to it. BTW if in #1 Google hasn't cached your page it may also be because they cannot read your navigation or internal links and as a result have never found your pages. There are a number of tools that will examine your page just like the Search Engine bots do and report on whether or not your links can be read. Here is one that I use http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/sim_spider.cgi. If Google is having trouble following your internal linking structure you could use a site map with text links only to over come the problem. Just remember to put a text link on each page pointing to the site map.
thanks for the input. I think my sites navigation is fine, although I will make sure all pages are linked with just a basic html link. I'll check that site out and see how my site is. thanks again Morly
Why do these threads that are years old get bumped? The OP has had 14 posts within the past 3-4 years, I doubt they will be reading this thread =)
