Suggestion Including a Google Translate in the Post area?

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by purpleorange, Oct 5, 2013.

    Greetings!

There are several threads composed with bad English grammar and there were threads with members angry on people making such posts as they feel that this is reducing the quality of the forum.

So, will it be useful to have a translate function in the post area which will help users to type in their own language? It might encourage them to express more and provide detailed information about their question/ answer.

    Hi,

I am not sure if this idea would actually work because even Google translate is not 100% accurate in translating certain languages and statements. So, there are chances that it might translate it to a different context which was not intended. Also, I think Google translate doesn't work well with "all" the languages.

Its better to have this as a strict English speaking forum and users can very well learn English (which will definitely help them in their life)

Hell no - Google translate does a horrid job.

If people skipped primary schools and have no idea how to read & write then let the be punished . You're punished if you write bad code or make shitty graphics so why be lenient on those who type their English with broken hammer ?

DP has definitely gone global long time ago. So, i thought people from other countries must be given a fair chance to represent themselves.
DP is not a forum to test one's English Knowledge. I Think about the Technical knowledge that people from other language countries might bring in.

This is just sample translate by Google of your first post and now it will be surely clear to you that it doesn't make any meaning of any sentence when it is translated from English-Hindi and the same case is going to happen when we do vice versa so it's much better people improve their English of course Google is still free so if they didn't found any word they can search it on Google but writing in native language and then translating in English will make post more ridiculous.

PS: Don't report on this post because I had used non-English it is just to show OP what will happen it DP follow this idea.

I am Indian but i don't know Hindi (we have 22 languages). However i understood what you are saying. I wish with the Technology growth, some day it will be possible.

This Idea came to me after i had the opportunity of conversing with a German and a Japanese (two different occasions) who preferred not to post directly in the forum as they were not comfortable with people making fun of their broken English. They were experts in their field, but in their own language.

Thanks to every one who took time to reply to my Suggestion.

If you need translate to write English why not use an internet marketing/programming forum that is "local" and in your language? If there isn't one then start one, surely it would be a more successful niche than starting another arcade site, article directory or affiliate sales site.

Exactly. Although children find learning languages easier, even adults can learn another language to a good standard. My wife did; in about 2.5 years she has attained a very good standard of English. Albeit, she struggles with some accents (I have to translate from English to English, which Google translate wouldn't be able to help with :D), but can read, write and speak very well.

I used to have a lot of Chinese people contact me to help them improve their English. Whilst some were students, many were in full-time employment that involved international trade (or teaching) and knowing English would help to improve their job prospects.

I know it's not easy learning another language, but a few things that can help:
    1. Keep sentences short (less chance of mistakes and more readable).
    2. Avoid using informal written forms such as "u" instead of "you" and use full stops (periods) properly, not junk such as "u shud do lotz ov off-page........................". It looks moronic.
    3. Use a spell-checker. There are lots of web-based solutions to choose from that are free (use Google to find one).
    4. Use an online dictionary that has pronunciation keys and also audio samples (http://dictionary.reference.com is quite a good one).

hes right, knowing english always help people to do trades correctly, and over that, english is an international language needed to mix with people in society or life. So, if there, why not here ?

Some of my Indian friends once mentioned to me that knowing English in India is useful due to the large amount of languages. Some shops, restaurants, etc, have signs in the local language and English. Also when people talk about some topics they mix languages (I heard this myself when I was at a hotel Lucerne, Switzerland, and heard some Indian guys switching between English and their language when talking about purchasing a camera - Hinglish?). After the USA, it has more English-speakers than any other country. As there isn't one single language for India, it seems to me quite important.

I think "Hinglish" would be more useful than "Penguinese", what say you?;)

Lolz you both are full of humor.. Our First language is Hindi and Secondary language is English (Hindi+English = Hinglish);) so from school we had learned both languages and English is also used world wide so I don't think people who use internet and come to this forum have lot of problem with English. Otherwise there are 22 languages in India:confused: that can easily make confused to Google :D

I don't think it was Hinglish (more like switching languages during conversation), thinking back. Hinglish is more like Manglish (colloquial Malaysian English). Both are useful, for confusing non-speakers.:p:D

Keep in mind that maybe 50% (or less?) of people in India speak Hindi. It can sometimes be difficult dealing with regional accents and dialects, but 22 different languages?

absolutely correct only few states with proper Hindi and in rest of states people talk in their regional language. You will not believe this but there are few states in India which are Anti-Hindi NO one dare to speak Hindi there. People do communicate only in Their Regional Language or English.
