Incentives to Comment Blogs?

I am trying to boost the profile of my entrepreneur blog (getting a logo designed as we speak)
and I am looking at ways to get some more return traffic, and have come up with and idea (ok I stole it :p)

My top commenter list gets reset every week. And I have decided that I will do a small promo for the top 3 commenters for the week.

Is this a good incentive to get bloggers to comment?

Try adding in the "you comment, I follow" plugin in your blog. It removes the nofollow tag in wordpress, which encourages others to comment in your blog. However, this can also lead to lots of spam comments.. so you'll need to moderate it.

its a good idea, but by doing such a thing it might actually get people posting any old crap just to be the top commenter if you get me? in other words their posts could become worthless

I left a comment in your blog. Can't remember where now though.

I would say the main and foremost factor are the posts. Use top commentator for sure because that plugin is a great incentive. Apart from that just make sure your blog posts are top quality.

Give alot of quality advice, solve problems, give good resources and now and then provoke commentary by giving your opinion strongly on something you care about.

great advice! I like the idea because it gives an incentive for people to post comments - making the blog seem popular.

But if i get worthless comments I just delete them, as I moderate them.

It looks as if its working for you anyway. You've had 10 comments so far in the first post on your blog. I was the first comment poster there and so far I am also the last as I have just posted another comment asking a question this time. As long as there is not to much spam it should work great for your blog.

    Good luck!

Few people those having blogs apart from getting backlinks also wish to get comments in return, I think if you start commenting in their blogs too it will also motivate them. :)

SPAM is the keyword here, sometimes getting ahead of ourselves creates bigger problems. be careful what you wish for....

The only reason why blogs have nofollow in the first place is because of spam. If it were not for fraudsters and spam in this world then it would be a much better place.
