I have a Question for the memebers,

If only inactivity will kill SEO or a decrease in the number of posts made per day will also create problems?

Say for example my number of posts a day is 10 for a period of 10 months (ex a news website) then i bring it down to 5 posts a day.

Now obviously there will be a reduction in the number of visitors as there will be less number of SE refferals, but will the effect be out of proportion?

May be or may not be...... It's totally depends on your website topics or subjects
If your publish quality and user friendly content, then less chance to decrease you website traffic. Say for example:

=> If your website topic is related to seo. In seo many google algorithm updates come in a month or week. If you provide good and user friendly content, then wheneven come new updates use visit your website directly.
=> Some person use RSS feed option news come via emails.

I conducted a test not too long ago.

I had Google indexing four to five pages per hour. Then, I stopped updating for a week. The spiders didn't come back frequently. I started updating again, and they just indexed a dozen pages in the last hour.

I don't think dropping from 10 posts a day to 5 posts a day is going to hurt. It's when you stop posting for days at a time, that's when Google stops paying attention.
