I have set up my blog with its first post and AdSense, and now I need to get people to go to it. I though I knew how but links only boost PR, which is pointless(?). How do I get visitors to my site who will potentially be interested in the ads?

You need targeted website visitors, and here's a couple of free methods:

    1. Forum marketing: Where are you going to find forums in your chosen niche? Well, you can always run a Google search. I also recommend you visit bigboards.com. You will find a huge database of forums in all kinds of niches that you can tap into.
    2. Viral marketing: A viral marketing campaign needs a suitable "carrier" for your "viruses", for instance an ebook that will easily fall into the hands of your readers and they will pass it on to other readers. Make sure you place links in your ebook or report to your website, people who are interested will click on these links and you have your first targeted visitors.

While boosting PR might be pointless, backlinks also boost your SERP which is extremely important!
Social bookmarking sites are good for some untargeted instant traffic but don't expect many clicks on your ads.
Here is an advice: don't try to monetize your site right from the beginning. Attract some visitors, provide value first.

You have to specialize the website around a popular or semi popular keyword and always write that keyword when you promote it. That will get your website in the search engines under that keyword.

First off PR is a good thing!!
    Don't over look it!
If you have a high pr you have a better chance of ranking higher and getting search engine traffic.

Use forums in your niche to get your word out. leave your link in your signature.
Comment on other blogs in your niche leaving links in your post
For both of these you must be informative
Don't just say "nice post" as you will probably be overlooked.

write tons of articles and direct them towards your blog.
    Social bookmark your blog

If you REALLY want to there are traffic exchanges and safelist mailing to get people to you
The problem with this is everyone seems to just be looking for their own credits so no one really pays attention to the sites
although it has worked for people before so don't count it out just don't count it very high.
If you think you are capturing enough in your blog to accomplish this than give it a shot, it's free so you won't lose anything but itme.

Update your blog at least twice a week with new orignial content.
Ad placement is a big thing too.
I've noticed personally that this works best

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
ad ad ad ad blah blah blah blah
ad ad ad ad blah blah blah blah
ad ad ad ad blah blah blah blah
ad ad ad ad blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

    Hope yo understand that.
It seems as though when you have you ads mixed into your content people see them and click them much more often
again though do your own research
test test and test some more
