In Need of AdWords Advice

    Hi Guys,

I am managing an adwords campaign and am having quality score issues.

My client wants keywords that relate to "back pain". I have ran Google's keyword tool on the landing page, and it came up with keywords that relate to back pain. Even the ads I created for the group say "back pain" right in them. Still, I am getting a quality score of 1 and a "poor" keyword relevance.

I know that quality score relies heavily on CTRs, but I can't even seem to get my ads off the ground. Does this mean that there is too much competition that is more relevant then us? What should be my next step?

I would really appreciate any help or advice you could give me.

    Thanks in advance!

I am not an Adwords expert but have gleaned some info over the past year as I have experimented with Adwords.

Does your Ad title match the Ad Group name?

And are you also using the Ad Group name and ad title in the description?

It also sometimes helps if the url description has the ad title in it.

    For Example:

    The Ad Group name is:
    Back Pain Relief

    The Ad looks something like:

    Back Pain Relief
Hot product. Experience Back Pain Relief Instantly. Guaranteed.
    mywebsite.com/BackPainRelief
    mywebsite.com

Notice that the ad group name is in the title and also in the description, and in the display url (if it fits in the display url. It is ideal if the domain name has the keyword phrase in it I think, but may not be necessary? not sure. But is important that the domain name in the display url matches the domain name in the destination url.)

All the keywords for the ad group "Back Pain Relief" should contain the phrase "back pain relief" in them.

Then if the phrase "back pain relief" is mentioned on the landing page a few times, you are set to go.

You might get a quality score of 5, 6 at first, and have to pay at least 50 cents or more to get somewhere in the top 4 positions (depending upon the competition). But after awhile once the CTR has time to build if the CTR (click through rate) is 1 % or better the cost for your keywords will go down, and the quality score will improve over time.

This is just my 2 cents. As I said, I am not an Adwords expert.

    Hi Mike,

Is there anything Google might think is fishy about the page? Lots of affiliate links, any violation of their landing page guidelines...?

There is a strong link between CTR and QS as you know. QS is also normalized to position. You can have a QS 10 in any position, from first to 100th. It is a relative value of how you are doing against competitors for that keyword. So if your QS is 5, you are not doing so well relatively to other ads. Nothing to do with how much competition (there could be a few or 100s) and nothing to do with your bids. It is simply Google's way to tell you to improve your ads.

Thanks MusicMeFree! I'll try some of those out.

Clicking Chick - I don't believe there is anything wrong with the landing page. There are no affiliate links or anything that would go against Google policy. Despite the low quality score, Google deems the landing page's quality as "No Problems".

One other thing that may be the issue is that the landing page is titled "Physical Discomfort". It doesn't mention "Back Pain" specifically. I was under the impression, however, that it's not what is written on the landing page, but the keywords google finds relevant using the Google Keywords Tool on the page. Is it a bit of both?

    *edit*
Thanks, Lucid! I think my trouble is lying on getting my ads off the ground so that can get at CTR of anything. I have created two ads for the group, which all contain words that are in the keywords, which were suggested by google using the keyword tool.

    Thanks!
