In and out of indexes?

Is it normal for pages to move in and out of search engine indexes in the first few months of a website's life?

Will this also happen if you redesign your website and change the sitemap as I am noticing quite a lot of changes in my indexed pages and wanted to make sure I'm not being penalised for anything!

    Thanks

Yip its normal but some sites may experience it worse than others.

Are you changing your site a lot? Just make sure the bots can get to every page when making any changes.

My new sites have been jumping all over the index. Sometimes they are #1 for a search term, other times they are #50. The changes at first were relatively quick, like they would change every few days. They still jump around, but less often.

Thanks for the replies, it's good to know this is normal! One of my pages has just been reindexed today so I'll just have to wait for the others!

And don't stop to build more links on your site.
