In 2 minds over decision to start a bid directory

    Dont worry, im not looking for anyone to tell me what i should or shouldn't do.

    I see plenty of them popping up, i read how great some are doing, i know the obvious things to avoid like dropped domains and all that, otherwise you get a virtual kicking. :)

    But its the other things i read, as ever, google and general rumour creates the voices in my head, shall i, shall i not.

    Im worried that Bid directories will hit a brick wall, i cant see people bidding for ever on them, if for example, over time i built up good rep and PR on one, i fear top bidders would only go so far because theres a limit to how much anyone will spend on bids on any given directory, then the bid directory would hit a dead end, i think.... :confused:

    vicdigi thanks very much for those 2 thread links, ive just read through them both and its helped me make my decision.

    Im not feeling right about going ahead with it and its essential that i do in anything new, i have thoughts that cause me worry and so i wont go ahead with a bidding directory.

    I will stick with my current directories and work on developing them, and possibly start a few niches that i have in mind.

    All the best to Bid Directory owners though.

    Well if you have doubts about starting a bid directory, I say don't do it. Bid directories are only for those who are confident and willing enough to spend time developing them. Just saying that starting a bid directory is not for everyone, I suppose.

    Im confident in anything that i develop and always willing to put in the hours, you know when something is just missing? that inner voice and lack of good feeling about something. :)

    If you got the cash, the determination, and the time to succeed, go for it. Look at bigweb links. its not even that old. Bids are at $3k already. As we have seen, bids will always rise. i think its a matter of time before they get higher. Huge companies paid of $30k when the million dollar homepage was at its best. i think the same could happen on bidding directories (the quality ones)

    I agree, if you are unsure then it is best not to go ahead. I myself vowed not to jump on the bidding directory train but when David announced v3.2 phpld bid and said I could get some low-priced custom programming done I wanted to see an idea I had in my mind turned into reality. Eventhough my 'twist' on bidding was not earth-shattering it was unique enough that I felt good about offering it.

    I think for a bidding directory to survive long-term it should offer more than just the 'plain old' 10 top links on the home page.

    Let me know if you decide to do it. Theres no reason why not to, just look around at some sites like bigweblinks. Revenue is never ending. listed sites can still bring revenue, its not fixed fee like a normal directory.

    I am one of the first to get phplb back then, just didn't want to just release yet. I think Nick, NRLMedia was the first to announce at the forum with his phplb based directory. If I remember correctly, the site is now owned by Chris.

    I waited to get an update, which I asked Gabe, the creator of the script, for category link, which he finally released later on. By the time, there were so many phplb based directories, and I thought I didn't want to be one of them.

    It's always better to think something new and unique when people are after a popular thing. I bet you can have a good idea with your bidding directory. But if you are not certain how you should run it, it's better to wait.

    This update will be the first one for all phplb bid directories. Who knows what Google may be thinking? ;)

    there are a few types of submitters, like some wants to hit the 1st position, some wants to get on the first page so they hit the 10th website of the homepage! there are a few that wants to get a category placement, so they never try the homepage. also, there are a few that, only target the minimum bid ammount. so i guess, hitting a dead end is not going to happen. also bidding directories are best place for permanant links:D

    anyways, am still waiting for the PR update, let's see what happens!:)

    When bids are higher, I think you get a lot less difference in the amount of the bids, but I don't think they will stop, especially for the bid directories that offer good traffic.

    as we have seen over the past few months, bids will always continue to rise if the traffic is there. The higher bids rise means harder promotion by the owner, so even more people want a share of the traffic.
