Improving Page Ranking In Search Results

What is the best method of improving the rankings of many thousand pages in the search results already indexed by Google?

Is this done by link building? Should I deep link within my domain? such as www.xyz.com/fireworks-are-cool.htm?

Could I build links pointing directly to my domain name instead such as www.xyz.com? Will this improve the page rankings in the search results?

How should I improve the page rankings within the search results?

    Thanks!

You'll get higher PR by getting quality links.
You'll get higher SERP by having great and unique content + those quality links + a bit of SEO (site SEO friendly etc.)

at the present time, Google ranking weigh heavily upon quality/relevant backlinks

I personally send about 75% of my backlinks to my home page and the other 25% are split amongst all my internal pages

Build up your links by pointing links to your main domain, www.example.com
Once you have targeted linkbacks to your primary and secondary keywords of your hompage, then watch for your traffic stats, see which pages are getting hits and which target keywords are bringing in traffic to those pages, then build backlinks to those pages with those keywords, this can do huge benefit to you in bringing in more traffic to those pages

No Offense but this is not the best advise...the thing is, your pages will often be found through some very Un-targeted search queries, so why would you want to use them as anchor text

You should use the anchor text of the keywords that your webpages are intentionally targeted towards

    vstar is right.

It's important to have your keyword as the anchor text if you want to rank for certain keyword phrases on Google.
