Importing from blogger.com into Wordpress, need some advice

I have been thinking hard about importing one of my blogger blogs into Wordpress. I'm not very sure whether that will impact my SE results...Would Google list my sites as having duplicate content since the urls will be different and they will need to reindex my new site, and notice that the content is the same? Will they allow Adsense on the new site with all that dupe content?

I would import all the posts. Than change the old post on the blogger blog to link to the new post. I would perhaps also shorten the original posts to only have a portion of the post and a link to the new and complete post.

That was confusing but hopefully you follow what i am saying.

I transferred all my posts without any problem from kaizenlog.blogspot.com
    to kaizenlog.com using this tool.

    romantika.name/v2/2006/12/19/import-blogger-beta-to-wordpress/

After importing you can easily change the permalink structure using Wordpress permalink settings.

Basically go to your blogspot blog entries and cut them in half then make a link that says

Read More and make it to your new blog @ wordpress

    Topdraw,

The simple answer is that as long as you remove or redirect the old site to the new, then you shouldn't get a duplicate penalty.

The longer answer to your question depends largely on how you are using Blogger right now. If you are already posting over FTP to a domain with Blogger and are just switching systems from Blogger to Wordpress, then you don't even have to worry about it much, because the domain will be the same. The files names and directories will just be different. You might want to make sure you have a good 404 page set up, or redirects to the new file, but that's about it.

However, if you are upgrading from a site hosted on Blogspot -
    example.blogspot.com
    - to a domain or a site hosted with wordpress, then unless you make some changes to your template, and link back to the new domain, then you may get duplicate content penalties. I suggest for simplicity changing your template with a META redirect to the new site. I did this with one blog -
    mudhorny.blogspot.com
    - and even though I'm still using Blogger on the new domain over FTP, the same principle could apply.

You know, if you are using a domain you might make your life easier by first setting up Blogger with a custom domain. For a few days, you'd point your domain to Google's servers and the blog would just work at that domain. The old blogspot would redirect properly (301 status) to the new domain. THEN import your posts into Worpress where your domain will be and leave the blogspot account alone. This means that blogspot site would continue to redirect (via 301, which is good for the search engines), assumably for a long time. Problem solved.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for a helpful post ArcoJedi and all, but I dont know what people mean by using a custom domain in Blogger. Isnt Blogger/Blogspot domains all run like this...

    sitename.blogspot.com?

How can I use my own domain in Blogger? I presume you mean a domain I registered on my own - myowndomain.com? I've heard this before but I dont know how to do it..(setup my own custom domain in Blogger)

Maybe Blogger has more advanced features, but not that I'm aware of. I'm still using the old Blogger, never upgraded to the new version after reading what people say about it.

TopDraw, Yes I am referring to a domain of your own and a feature that was implemented in the new version of blogger -
    http://buzz.blogger.com/2007/01/blogger-custom-domains.html
    - I'm using this feature on at least four sub-domains and I've talked about it a bit here -
    http://blog.arconati.us/2007/01/blogger-custom-domains.html
    - I've had my issues with Blogger over the years, and I'm not going to try to convince you not to migrate to Wordpress, but the upgrade to the new version was mostly painless for me. The new features didn't wow me (except for custom domains) and I imagined that a lot of folks who were using highly customized templates (non-standard) were having difficulty using the new templates feature without a lot of code work. I just didn't see too many problems post-update.

Have you ever registered a domain? If not, it's relatively easy. Yahoo has domains right now for $1.99 / year. Good choice beyond that is GoDaddy. I'm sure that other places on this forum (or search Google) will give you good suggestions. Once you have a domain, there will be settings at that registrar that allow you to change the DNS record. If you change this to ghs.google.com and update your Blogger admin panel with this domain, it should point to your blog within 24-48 hours. The link above to buzz.blogger.com will get you started with more detailed instructions.

But this is just going off on a tangent and hijacking this thread. sorry :( If I were migrating from Blogger to Wordpress or from Blogger to New Blogger, no matter what, it would be time for me to get a domain if I didn't have one already. You want to worry about SE results, why not worry about them on a site that is 100% yours, not a subdomain of someone else, if you know what I mean?

No, youre not hijacking this thread, Arco...helpful post of yours, rep given. I will check out your post at blogger. All this custom domains on blogger is new stuff for me...a result of not upgrading

However, suppose for whatever reason I dont want to upgrade to the new blogger, will I be stuck with the problem of dupe content besides placing a link at my old blogger blog to send visitors to my new self hosted domain? :) As I'm not really keen on blogger anymore...

I think that the duplicate content penalty can be negated by simply modifying your blogspot template entirely to remove post content altogether. I have this on one blog right now that has dozens of posts, but none are available for viewing.
    http://monstercommerce.blogspot.com/
I was originally making this blog when I worked for that company last year, but have since stopped updating it. It just redirects to their home page.

If you modify your old template after importing the posts into Wordpress, I think you avoid the duplicate content penalty because the old content has been moved.

Anyone else agree / disagree? Does the old content stay cached long enough to cause a problem for the new site? You are going to be continuing to update the new site so I think that the ranking will quickly migrate to the new site. Of course, no one can tell you for sure except Google. :S

Note - A few weeks after posting this example, I started working at MonsterCommerce again, and reopened the blog. Now it no longer applies in the same sense of the example.

Try this one - http://mudhorny.blogspot.com/ - that redirects to the domain. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes I am agree with ArcoJedi. First step to do is change your blogspot url to Blogger custom domain. Then wait until your site is indexed with the new Custom domainurl. Example:yourblog.blogspot.com to yourblog.com. You could see in the google by typing--> site:yourblog.com

after that, wait for the next PR update, after your new custom domain PR updated, you could move to wordpress and remain the PR and Traffic. I got success using the method from this source:
    http://www.blogbloke.com/migrating-redirecting-blogger-wordpress-htaccess-apache-best-method/
    Code (markup):
Try that method, and you will see the magic Happen to your Blog.

    Success to You:)
