Important - Your PMs Are Going To Be Deleted

I finally got around to coding this.

So private messages are going to be auto-deleted after they are 90 days old (Sent ones and ones in your Inbox). You can keep PMs for 365 days if you move them to a custom PM folder (after 365 days they will be deleted as well).

There is now a note about it when viewing any PM folder... for example:
The actual process that cleans out old PMs won't start until next week (that gives you 5 or so days to decide if you want to keep certain PMs for more than 90 days).

Any PM you want to keep indefinitely, you will need to download (under the "Selected Messages" drop-down, there are options to download as XML, CSV or TEXT).

Shawn, I can't move Sent PMs to another folder, that option does not exist in the Sent Items page.
Is that intentional? or can you add that option?

That's a vBulletin "issue". It would be nice to be able to do it, but I'm not going to code it personally. People have requested it for a future version of vBulletin, but who knows if/when they will add it:

Uhm, you can always delete PMs on your own you know. :)

I have 144 messages I want to keep. I made a new custom folder called oldies but I cannot move my messages there. Only export them.

How do I move them? And this: Oldies contains 0 messages (automatically deleted after 365 days). is not true? Because some messages I want to keep are from 2004 ("why do you keep such old junk? to show your children?" "Well maybe! :p")

You can't put Sent items into a custom folder, only stuff to you.

If you want to keep anything from 2004, you will need to export them and keep them on your computer, because they definitely will be deleted (regardless of the folder they are in).

Good, I always delete only a few pages, afraid some of the old PMs have something worth saving in them. Of course they don't. Just a habit that gmail has taught me, never to delete anything :)

I just got a warning for having full (1K PMs). I downloaded all as a textfile and deleted.

Then I just thought about how big your DB might be due to all those old PMs ... and now I see this hack - nice!

I recently made my own forum and made some custom changes.

Do you want to display rep and power count over the green squares?

I also changed to have a new green for each 25 rep, fits better for a new forum. Perhaps I should make a post with all the changes ...

Yeah... it's quite large. Not so large it's a problem right now, but at some point, it would start being gigs of PM text in the DB just because people are too lazy to delete them... so here we are...

Mine's been between 950 and 1000 for weeks as well (again) and I'm also one that can't be asked to clean up the lot so thanks for the cool improvement.

I'd love to see originals automatically deleted after you reply to them and then indeed the ability to move sent items. But you can leave that for later :D

PS I think this could be worth a 'newsletter' since I know some members don't log on every week so they might miss this post and the 5 day deadline.

That's fine if you want to delete old PM's but I have a suggestion for easy exporting PM's if someone has something important like may be a Trade conversation.
Can you send the whole webpage as html document to an email I specify ?
I have no idea about how you will put the source code in a textarea and then send it to email but you are yourself quite good at programming and there are so many others here who have the skills to play with this.
Putting the source in textarea will be the difficult part.
There is an export as text option as you mentioned may be something to that...

    Regards
