Sitemaps can play a huge role in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) It instructs search engines on how to locate and index your site. This means that search engines find your website a quicker and you have a much better chance for ranking well with them.sitemap is basically a map of your website and includes the URLs for each webpage of your website. I couldn't agree more that an XML sitemap is important for site indexing. Here is a tool - http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ - which generates a sitemap automatically, you just need to put a URL there and wait a little. Unfortunatelly, it includes only 500 pages in a sitemap (a free version) but it should be enough if your site in new. Once you XML sitemap is generated, go to Google webmaster Tools and submit it (webmaster is linked with other google accounts, with mail for example, so if you have one, you don't need to create one more).
The most important part of the XML sitemap is that when registered with the search engines it lets them know of all of your pages. A lot of times the links can't be followed by the spiders because of Flash, Javascript, deeply placed links, etc. This allows the search engine to be aware and crawl all of your pages. You can also tell them how often the page changes so they can be sure to check back for updates instead of keeping the old version of your page in their database.
I find that when I add a new page to my sitemap file it helps Google and other Search engines to find and index my the new page on my site quickly, usually within a day or two. I highly recommend you go into Google's Webmasters tools and resubmit your sitemap so that Google will index your site with the new page(s) you have recently added.
i would think it plays a valuable roll in PR since it is possible for google to over look a page that exists and by eliminating that possibility you then rank a bit higher
Having a proper and updated sitemap helps Google bot to index your site pages easily. Also, sitemap helps users to navigate to a specific page easily.
