Importance of 'related links' in Alexa

I have a tool bar that shows related links from Alexa and there has been a time or two where I've actually gone to the sites...but I do not see much discussion of them here.

Are they an important aspect that should be paid closer attention? (Should I add related links for my site, should I add my site to the related links of other sites?)

What would be the best way to utilize 'related links' and what other engines offer them?

    Just curious,

Spam maybe, but not ads. You can add them yourself, I'm just wondering if they are significant & how they should be used (for or against).

Then again, I've never completely filled out the form, but from what I've seen there is no charge. The ones listed for here are Promojunkie, Best Practices Search Engine Forums, and CEO business SEO forums, to name the first three...

Originally I posted this up in the search engine threads, I reckon a mod moved it thinking it applied here. *shrug* So I'm not sure if the move was the cause for a lack of replies or if it's just because no one really cares...

Either way, I've added some of my favorite related (but non-competing) links to my site and have added myself to several of my competitions pages. I made it to the top ten lists on a few of those sites, others I did not.

I am assuming that it may take multiple submissions of related links for sites with a lot of listings. For instance, I'd assume it would take a bit of work (and more then one person) to knock the listings from DP here.

I'm now thinking about grabbing up my friends to see if I can get my site as the top listing on competing sites. I figure the worst that could happen is I get a few extra hits *shrug*

I would like to hear from others on how they see this option and whether or not it can be or is a decent marketing stratagy.

P.S. On a related note, a Korean Tech site actually made it to the first two stops on Alexa's related links list (for alexa itself) these only lasted for just over 24 hours. I assume the change was due to Alexa realizing the sites had nothing to do with them what-so-ever...but then, I could be wrong, I never actually visited the sites. ~ and sorry, I've no actual proof this happened
