Remember- directory submission customers are often repeat customers. Treat them right and review their listing as fast as possible. This is one key to having a profitable paid directory business.
Good advice, I try to get to all of the submissions listed in less than 24 hours, sometimes I fall a little behind but for the most part I am on top of it.
I always have done, i check my email often so if i see a payment i get to dealing with any submission quickly. If i get one while im in bed sleeping then i deal with it first thing when im back at my pc in the morning. Theres no reason to keep them wating. Some directory owners deliberately keep them waiting to appear busy, or that they took ages reviewing a site, more like a few minutes actually looking at it. Also some dont do the review at all and hope that some paid submissions will just be forgotten by the submitter. I look at it like this, if i reached a checkout in a supermarket and the person got up and said they will be back in about 4 or 5 days to serve me, well i would say wtf? Thats how i look at it.
Pipes- "Some directory owners deliberately keep them waiting to appear busy" Sometimes I wait 30 min just so it does not appear to be an automatic approval.
How do you know that, Did they tell you? But I agree with the point of this post and would add that I think for paid directories it's polite to send out a 'pending' email, and if a site's rejected to clearly state why it's not been accepted.
I would not worry about falling behind unless you make some guarantees. The reality is, it often time takes time to review a site, and to follow up with possible corrections.
I think any directory which charges a submission fee should have a Terms of Service clearly outlining what the fee covers, and what a client should expect once the fee is paid including the review times.
I knew the tricks that they used, i knew in cases that the submissions could of been dealt with straight away. I watched one directory that always showed about the same amount of pending listed on the homepage, they were fake, an attempt to make the directory look more popular. In the music world its cool for a diva to tun up late, but in business i feel its rude to make people wait when its not necessary. Theres exceptions, like if the owner has a full time job and the directory is just a side thing, or family issues or ill health affects the persons ability to deal with a submission as quickly as they might have.
Agree. Hint to all that keep asking about how to get more directory business- My stated policy is review wthin one business day. When the customer's site is listed in less than an hour, I often receive another submission from that customer.
My directory has a notice in the Pending email stating that the site will be reviewed (pending being approved or rejected) within 48 hours, so the submitters are not left wondering about their listing.
The same can be applied to free submissions. Free directory submissions are often on the back burner, which is fine. Someone not paying should be behind someone who is paying. That being said, if you get back to a free submitter fairly quickly you stand a good chance of getting him back. The more often he shows, the more likely he'll shell out for a featured link.
