Has anyone conducted any research on the value of different domain name extensions for seo? .com and .org are obviously the most prevalent in the search engine results but this is just as likely to be due to the fact that 95% of websites are either .com or .org. I don't see many .net or .us sites appearing and absolutely no .tv or .mobi sites. I have a client that just purchased 2 .tv domains and I was wondering if they might be detrimental to SEO even if the .com sites don't exist. Any opinions out there on wether Google devalues an extension other than .com and .org? Cheers, Alec
.net and other tld's domain names register by people who really not care about domain promotions or people who not need promotions. This may be my view, but I think so.
I don't think it's true that the owners of .net domains aren't concerned about promoting their sites, if that's what you mean. Surely every webmaster wants to promote their sites. I bought the .net domain in my sig because the .com version wasn't available, not because I didn't want to promote the site.
Ya you are right I have never come across a result other than .com, .net, .org, .info and my regional domain but still there are tons of extentions.... i have seen them in search results....
From a rankings perspective, it doesn't matter. What matters is relevancy and backlinks. With that said though, .net, .org, .info ect. are likely to get confused with .com for many on the internet (meaning your promotion is likely to get bled off to your .com counterpart).
