Impact of changing the home page title tag

I am quite new to this and am looking for some advice.

My website is still pr1 after the last update despite google recognising over 40 backlinks (MSN shows about 300 backlinks), and most of these are one-way.

I want to improve optimisation by adding more content to the home page and also change the title to focus on some key words.

will changing the title have an adverse affect? Will Google see it as the old page deleted and new one added, thus putting me back to square one?

    Grateful for some advice.

    Thanks

If you mean google adsense will delete your site because you just completely updated it. No it wouldn't. But I could be wrong.

The title has nothing to do with the PageRank but of course it can have an effect at the serps.

yep - A title cannot affect your PR from what I know, if it contains keywords though, it can affect your SERP's based on the presence of those keywords or not :)

Try to put in the title only one keyword which in fact can be made up of more then one word.
What I mean if your target keyword is hosting and knowing that this is a very competitive field you should choose perhaps a combination of words, to bring down the the sites you have to compete with, so for example cheap web hosting, would be better, so your title could be some thing like this:

Cheap Web Hosting – Name of Company – Cheap Website Hosting

And the all web page should be around these words.

Another point if your site was selling flowers before and the title was Flower Shop and now you change from flowers to cats, then I think you might have a problem.

But if you where selling flowers and now you are selling only roses, your title should still mention “Flowers – Roses” to give a continuation.

Depending what is your market, if it competitive, you should just forget about Google for a while and concentrate on MSN and Yahoo, both are easier then Google.

For MSN you can stuff your site with a lot more keywords, it penalizes with Google, but anyway a new site to make into Google is difficult, try to find a balance.

    Hope it helps.

No impact on PR, but big impact on SERPS.

tip - put in it the title of the page :) , i really mean it (title has one of the keywords at least).

MSN and Yahoo are much more tolerant.
and a new site as little chance of coming up on any Google search, so my advice for a new site, concentrate on MSN and Yahoo.

a new site does have more than a small chance in coming up in Google it just depends on your niche and how difficult your keywords are. For example with Myspace help sites its easy to get a site ranked for 2 or 3 keywords in the first month and even the most difficult keywords for that niche within 3 months
