Images on a different server?

    Question...

I noticed Yahoo does this and I think maybe even pornbotspace...oh I mean MySpace. Images hosted on another domain and server to improve performance and space and all that. Is it a good idea? I got a twitter-like site with over 100 members (in 2 months mind you :D sorry im proud lol) and all their avatars takes ages to backup even on my faster cable-moden PC. I am on a VPS but wondering if I should get another VPS and domain to host all the images on?

What do yall think? Opinions? Suggestions? Talks about good food? Tell me what you think! :D

Yes, it can help to reduce load on your server and speed up your site if images are hosted on a different server. Instead of looking for a VPS though, maybe try out a shared hosting account to keep your images on. The problem you will have though, is if you allow a user to upload images/avatars, you will have to ensure that they are loaded onto the correct server.

Easy setup a subdomain CDN.domain.com and rewrite images from there with mod_rewrite

You can buy a file hosting account(many hosts provides that) and then put all your images in that server. You can then pull of the images from that server to your site . I think it is worth trying :)

That would be very important if you have only few bandwidth for your hosting account. And also it reduces the server load by a big amount.
