Google Owns Image Searching (Yahoo! NOW uses Google's Image SERPs)

As We Shockingly found out - a high ranking for a popular image search term can INSTANTLY increase a Website's traffic by
    10,000 % - in a few days!
(look under Google or Yahoo for "John Lennon")

Optimizing for IMAGES is an art in itself...

How about a "sub-forum" on Search Engine Image and News optimization

Getting a feed position / story on a Google or Yahoo News site can also has an extreme - albeit - relatively short affect on traffic. ;)

Mmmmm... probably best to use the normal search engine optimization forum. I suppose if there are enough image specific threads going, we can create a sub-forum and move them.

having plenty of images index by google also leads sometimes to a new problem
HOTLINKING of you pics in other forums, blogs, etc ...
and that can cause quiet some traffic without anyone ever visiting your own website - just traffic and server-load ..
i had that a few times and had to ask these users to store at least the stolen pics on their server instead of hotlinking to mine. now at present hotlinking is within acceptable range. many times daily but within limits. and at least they select nice pics :)
the .htacdess hotlinking entry did for some unknown reasons NOT work, also i did want to preserve Google itself to hotlink or store.

FYI FWIW: If you are running Apache, you can use mod_rewrite and/or .htaccess so that if the referrer is NOT your site, access is denied to your images.

I get a LOT of this (linking to my images), and it's kinda annoying (although funny at times) ... I've debated doing the above (and have sometimes slipped in alternate images for stuff like eBay auctions), but doubt I would do it.

One thing I've thought about is maybe having a mod_rewrite rule such that if an external site references an image, it re-writes it on the fly (using something like the GD library) so the web URL is plastered across it, but I'm not sure I want to add the CPU processing power to it (nor do I think I want to add alternate images EVERYWHERE).

    My two cents,
    alek
