image links vs text links

My website has primary clickable images for its internal links. These images often have text underneath them but for now I have not made that text a link because I thought it might be bad to have duplicate links (one text, one image) right next to each other leading to the same page. So my question is: provided I have good alt tags on the image links, will turning the text into links help or hurt me?

You should use title and alt text if you want to continue using image links.

    follow up questions:

    1) In SEO, does image alt text count as content in a web search the same way page text does? or does it only count in image searches?

    2) does alt text in a link pass on juice to the destination page the same way a text link does?

    thanks.

apart from passing a link juice, text link with right keyword as anchor helps in ranking.
