Hello, I found this http://dasme.org/imagegal/download.php and think it is a great gallery. It allows dynamic thumbnail, description and larger image to be generated and displayed. I think it is great for people as any one can update it via dumping image files and making a text file for the description. The script is quite old and has not been updated in a while. Are there any similar galleries out there that do a similar job? Allows for more advanced features such as the 'lightbox' craze? What other galleries do people recommend that has easy upkeep and cool features. The gallery is for both CMS type websites and text editor made sites. Thanks,
flickr.com is a great site for loading and sharing photos. Once your photos are in a gallery, you can link to an XML feed of your gallery that Flickr generates. Advanced users can manipulate these XML feeds. For instance, I have created several Flash galleries that load the images dynamically from the Flickr feed. This allows my clients to post their photos easily on Flickr then, on the client's website, the Flash pulls in the photos automatically. It gives the clients a cost-effective way to keep their galleries updated.
Wow danfinney that sounds like a good idea! Will it automatically call the main image, thumbnail and it's description? Is using Flash a good way of making dynamic image galleries? How have you gone about it? With the images being called via a XML file I assume it will load quicker? Thanks,
Speedking, yes the Flash file can use and display anything in the XML file, so you can bring in descriptions, comments, make thumbnails, whatever. Depending on your skill level with flash and actionscripting, you can make the descriptions appear on mouse-over, create thumbnails, allow users to select different galleries within the Flickr account, it really is limitless. It wouldn't necessarily depend on Flash either. Whatever programming language you are most proficient in, can interact with the XML file. I just find with Flash, I can create a slick interface that brings some wow-factor to the site, and since Flickr gives the administration tools for free, I don't have to bill the client for installing a CMS. For clients that do have a CMS, it is possible to create a Flash file that does the same thing, as long as the CMS can output an XML file that gives image paths at the bare minimum.
Hey danfinney thank you for your response. Do you have any examples online of your Flikr and custom Flash galleries? How do your clients feel about uploading images to Flikr? Any security or usage concerns? This approach seems an interesting way to go about creating galleries. I can just embed the Flash file in the CMS or custom made pages it seems. Thank You!
This looks interesting: http://flapi.f4l.be/index.html I assume something along the lines of this can be easily created? Thanks,
