Image ads might be good, but it's really mostly about what blends in better in your site. You need to test things all the time. First try image one month, see how it does, then try text ads for another month and compare.
I find that text ads are clicked more often, then image ads. As far as the payouts, it has alot to do with your sites subject matter.
I find that text ads pay more, but I like to use a mix because if you use only one or the other, your earning will be watered down by cheaper clicks on ads in 3rd or 4th position that pay less. Also, mix in some Clickbank affiliate product ads into your site.
An image ad is usually fairly obvious that it is an advertisement. Some people will still click on them anyway, but I think they click less. If it's a text add you can make them look more like other links and colors of your site, make it match or blended. So sometimes people don't realize this until they have already clicked a text ad. The per click amounts vary for both. I just have better luck with text ads.
