I'm thinking about moving to another State...........

I have roommates right now, and the cost of living is pretty low, but I don't expect this to last forever. I live in Reno, NV, and the cost for apartments is absolutely insane. I checked on Craiglist, and all the apartments are too high.

Nevada seems to be an expensive state due to it close proximity to California. I don't really like southern states, but I've been thinking of moving to Texas, because the apartments are cheap, and they seem to be safe places.

I see studios in Houston, Dallas, and Austin going for like $350 to $400 a month, and some are even cheaper. I can't find this where I live. What do you guys think, is there anyone who lives in Texas?

Because I have an online business, I'am not limited to living in one place because of a job. I'am fully self employed, and I don't really have friends, or family for that matter. I'm not tied down. I have not wife and kids. I can essentially move anywhere in the world, so long as I have a stable connection to the Internet. I'm just getting sick and tired of high apartment payments and high power bills. Our power bill was $249 last month, and I would like a place where the power is included.

Yes, NYC does have a lot to offer, but the cost of living is way too high. If I'm going to move to New York to lower my costs of living, I might as well stay here in Reno.

    Tesla,

I am a native of Texas but not your generation. The towns you mentioned, Dallas, Austin, and Houston are going to feel like Hell's oven in the summer - hot with high humidity.

Austin is YUPPI capital of Texas. It is pretty, has activities that appeal to college age and above inhabitants. Of the three areas you mentioned it would be my preference. I doubt cheap affordable housing is one of them. You may find dumps (aimed toward college crowd) in the price range you mention but the cost of buying a house there comes with big price tag. On the plus side if you locate in the college district you would have access to the "dillow" (Armadillo) trolley system. Also there is a lot of high tech industry in the area.

Dallas and Houston are big sprawling cities. There are areas in both of those in which you would not want to live. My nephew has just moved to Dallas and has located in a region where he feels safe to walk on the street at night but told his Dad there were places he would not.

I think you will find the cost of groceries and gas lower than in Reno.

Some of the small towns of Texas would be your best bet in regard to low living expenses but would have nothing to offer in recreation ammenities. Finding housing could be a problem as well.

Climate wise, West Texas probably would match the Reno climate better than East Texas. The disadvantage is you would be totally isolated and price of groceries and gasoline greater. Groceries are higher due to transportation costs but for the life of me do not understand the price of gas with petroleum production and refining facilities in the region.

As a doodle bugger's daughter, I have moved all over and tend to enjoy wherever I am. Wherever you happen to locate, I hope you enjoy your stay.

    Shannon

New Hampshire, I don't know about real estate but no income tax, no sales tax, no seat belt laws, minimal if any gun control, the free state project is located there, they are the "live free or die" state, if I were to move that is definitely the state I would move to.

I moved to the US from England about 12 months ago and I can tell you definately not Ohio. I'm there and it sucks lol. I'd move to Washington State, been there a few times and that's where i'm going to move to when the time is right. ;)

I'm a single person with no family or kids, and I don't plan on having any in the future. A studio apartment or even a room would be enough for me. While I don't want to live in a gated community, I also want to avoid living in places where I will be afraid to walk the streets at night. I'm looking for an affordable balance between the two.

    No, sorry to say.

It's not legal in Clark County which Vegas is in.

It's legal in most of the rest of the State though.

I would say you should move to New Jersey. I have lived there for about 7 years and it's great! Everything is close around you. Garfield and Clifton are good if you want to walk at night and not get shot :). Now I don't know about the rent its about 1000 a month a one bed room house but you can try to find roomates.

Yeah, why not NY, a 23s/f studio, with trash cans view, in a moldy basement with no windows is only $4,000/month...
No extra for the trash smell....

Seriously, I think you may find a place in the world's a*****e, in the middle of nowhere, like in North Dakota, where the first store is at 2,000 miles away...Rent are probably a couple of bucks/year :D

You say you have no friends/family/social-life etc ... but do you want these things? Don't think about what you have, think about what you want ...

If you move away from cities, things can get EXTREMELY cheap. I lived in Iowa for a few years, and nice apartments were $90-100 (3-5 years ago, they're up to $120 now). This was a town with ~25,000 people too, not completely in the corn fields.

Texas is probably not your best choice - the weather is miserable and alot of people don't speak english. Not to mention Texas will hang you if you look like somebody that committed a crime.

This link may be of interest:

You might consider moving out of the country... cost of living in some other countries is quite lower, and they're not currently occupying anyone else's country ;)

Thanks for the link Yoyo, that is pretty interesting. So it looks like Maine is the safest place to live, and Washington DC is the most dangerous. They have like over 1300 violent crimes carried out per 100,000 people, that is crazy.

I thought about leaving, but depending on where I go, I would have to learn a new language. I really want to do more research.

I've also considered states like Iowa because I have found that there seems to be a net population migration out of state, which means a lot of people are leaving. I've also heard there are tax benefits being given to people who move there. Iowa is not good for college students, but if you are already wealthy, or you have an internet business like me, it sounds great.

At this point in my life, family isn't that important. I don't know if I will ever get married, and I can't see myself having any children. I'm happy living the bachelor lifestyle. Maybe things will change in the future, but that seems to be the way I'am at this point.

Cost is my primary consideration, and raising a family is just too expensive for a person like me, someone who wants to save up a great deal of their wealth.

Tesla, I don't want to discourage you on Texas but just wanted you to be aware of the heat and humidity you will experience.

Austin is pretty and has many cultural/educational advantages for young people.
