I'm stuck with a LAME name. Domain name help please!

I would love some advice about my moron domain name.

    My website is: http://www.inb0x.com. That's inb0x with a ZERO, not an "o".

I bought the site for the business, obviously, not the name.

It is a truly lame name. :(

If I really want the someone to type in the right URL I've got to mention the zero or the site won't be found. I'm sure I miss a lot of traffic to inbox.com (the one without the zero).

Here are some things I've thought of to help visitors remember the 0.

    1. Adding a slogan like: "We put 0's at the end of your traffic count." (I think that just might be the lamest slogan in all of the world)

    or

    2. "We zero in on quality content"

    or

    3. I've also thought about using some kind of graphic in the logo, like the 0's and 1's that a computer sees as a background with the logo coming out of it...something like that.

    or

    4. Maybe just putting a diagonal line through the zero in the logo.

    or

    5. just live with it, there's nothing I can do.

What are your votes? Any other suggestions?

Well not only is your name a little difficult for people to remember... it is also completely irrelevant to your website.I went there expecting something related to e-mail, but instead I found a forum posting service.

If it were me, I would search around for a new domain name.Something that users will find memorable and that actually relates to what I'm doing.

    Hope this helps :)

Ditch the name and get another, more relevant one; otherwise you will spend more time trying to overcome the constrictions you have placed on yourself than you would like.

    Ha,

Too true. I know it is completely irrelevant. It has become a fun past time of mine to try to come up with a reason that might make it relevant to the business. :)

I don't know that I have the guts to completely get rid of it though since it is pretty well known in the industry. If I change the name it might be known as, "Inb0x, or, you know, that company that used to be Inb0x". I'd want to at least earn back the money I spent on the site before changing the name. Just in case I did lose traffic because of a name change, then at least I would have already made something of a return on investment.

So, if you had to keep the name...any ideas about making the best of it?

Hmm, just saw your post bobby9101. That might be the way to go...the 301 redirect. Do the search engines mind this? Any reason I shouldn't do a 301 redirect?

I don't understand why you're afraid you'll lose traffic. It's not like you're no. 1 for 'inbox' on the serps so people are either finding your site by typing inb0x.com into the address bar or they're getting to your site from other advertising.

Get a new domain and just redirect inb0x. Working on a domain name that you're eventually going to trash seems counter productive.

If I were going to try to explain the site with a slogan, I'd use the most basic approach I could think of, in this case: "Inb0x with a zer0, y0u better n0t f0rget it!" or "Inb0x with a zer0, cause we like being just a bit different fr0m the 0ther guys." etc. As far as content not matching name, different issue there.

    *edit*

    or just - "Inb0x with a zer0" - right to the point.

I always liked your name to be honest and I've never had a problem remembering it. :)

Of course, maybe none of you are as l337 as me. :D
    1 4/\/\ 7h3 \/\/1/\/\/3R!!!!

Maybe instead of thinking of a relavent name for your service, why not try to brand a company name?

    Good luck!

    mcfox,

    There's a dog in the box. :)

    To everyone who has replied,

Thanks for the comments, they are most helpful indeed.

I go back and forth as this thread has. Some days I think the name is great...because maybe it's got good branding value, like Yahoo or other nonsense names.

I mean, Yahoo has nothing to do with yodeling or mountain tops or anything, right? Of course, would it have gotten as popular if it was Yaho0 with a zer0? Maybe, maybe people would think it was strange and actually remember it even better?

Or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself of something I don't really believe.

I checked some other names and found forumformula.com was available. What do you think?

    Hehe ... :)

Do yourself a favour and NEVER post a domain name before you buy it. ;)

I think you are trying to convince yourself it might work. Unfortunately, people are fickle not to mention somewhat unsavvy when it comes to the internet - they aren't going to take the time or trouble to remember a name with a zero in it for forum posting.

Doesn't mean the domain itself is a washout - people will take the time and trouble to remember a zero if it's something ... um, they probably shouldn't be looking at. Kind of underground, know what I mean?

So for forum posting, inb0x is crap, imo.

For a site with ... I dunno ... stuff like you find on ebaumsworld or that type of site, it's pretty darn good, imo. Teenagers will remember it and pass it to their friends in a hushed whisper .. "inbox with a zero".

<edit - case in point - EGS remembers it no problem>

PS - I'll delay on my consultation fee until you sell inb0x.com for several million as a big traffic website - 5% of the selling price is fine ;)

I found your post quite humorous. :D

Yeah, as far as forumformula goes...I guess I just don't care about it that much to worry if someone will take it...more power to 'em I guess. If I get to it today and find it to be gone I'm going to put a "wanted" sign up all of DP. ;)

Just thought I'd get an opinion on the name from the likes of you all before taking the $3 plunge.

Are you on somekind of medication?

since when did yodellers or mountaneers shout yahoo,l yahoo is an expression of happiness or something that you may shout when you find something youve been looking for so it is relevent, of course the branding and massive marketing helped them a bit:eek:

Get a simple name that means something to your site you'll find it much better

sorry for all spelling mistakes there it's late and i'm almost asleep

    Hi aplayer_uk,

I never would have thought it either except I recently called Yahoo and while I was waiting they had this recording of a yodeler (I think) calling "yahooooo".

Maybe I am on medication but that was my first thought...that they were trying to give me the impression of a yodeler on a mountain top yodeling "yahooooo".

Now go on, give em a call and tell me what you all think it is....:D
