I still like osCommerce.... I know it's like old but it has lots of features and is fairly easy to skin.

osCommerce is a great but can be frustrating when undertaking SEO

My colleague insists that Zen Cart is better as it has more functionality

well, it all depends on how optimize your site. I believe it is still able to get it fairly well optimize as long as we keep up the good work and patiently promoting our site.
Focus on your keywords, and content of your page.
    :)
    GOod luck.

Go with Zen Cart. I have used it, and it does a really good job.

Hostingunderadollar.com offers cheap web hosting that comes with Cpanel/Fantastico which has oscommerce and cubecart pre installed. That would be a good choice.

I think that osCommerce will be your first pick and choice. It is light and fast and powerful.

Currently, Magento and Prestashop are your best bets. Anything else is outmoded crap.... oscommerce, zencart, and anything else of that nature is an utter trainwreck.

Just because any nitwit can install something and upload products doesn't make it a professional solution. SEO is a major factor in my considerations but more noteworthy, the code base is. The ones I mentioned afford you the ability to properly design something as they have proper separation of design markup from the logic bits.

Stay as far away from oscommerce as humanly possible.

hope that helps, E-Commerce is what I do.

I wish prestashop was more developed, magento is the slow fat kid in e-commerce platforms.
