    So I have been working on this site the last couple days:

    It let people make accounts, friend each other, and there are forums, and I can make blog posts.

    And I mostly made it just by following this video:

    But since that didn't have actual forums, this one too:


    It is just a WordPress site, but if I spend some time tweaking the theme and taking off the WordPress branding, shouldn't I be able to make it a "real" site people could really use?

    Well done, and I really hope you've enjoyed the process!
    I guess you've known that wordpress is not the best solution you can pick for forums when you've started working on it. The point is different.
    Of course that is possible to create a 'real" social website using Wordpress. The compentitive advantage of wordpress is that a person can watch a youtube tutorial or two and create a functional website.
    Yet, if you needed a competitive advantage related to forum functionality, the wordpress won't likely be your choice.
