Then you would be missing out ;) (soon to be viral!) besides you don't get something for nothing!

At the same time I totally agree with the comments and I'm definitely looking at some different ways to do this. The site is also being exploited - using the recommend form to send spam grrrrr. Site is soon to be updated but I don't want a capcha control on that too ...

Not really 'missing out' i would say, because by the time i would submit 16 sites to a directory with image verification turned on i could have submitted all my 16 sites to 4 directories with it turned off, times that by say a few hundred directories & you will see how that image verification wastes time & thats when it's working perfectly, don't get me started about 'invalid code' lol

I do submit to sites with image verification turned on but they must offer something i deem to worthwhile for my time lost like High PR atleast a 5...

I don't use image verification on Hi-Tech Directory :D Submit away!!! :) No PR yet as it's brand new but predicted to be PR4 and hopefully higher as I am promoting and working hard on it.
I hate image verification and use a reciprocal to help eliminate spammy sites. I still get those who submit for a "free with reciprocal" and don't leave a recip url. Straight to the delete button with them :D

So it seems most dont like the Captcha. On mine I have the code 6+3= and you add 9. Do you find those annoying as well? I was getting about 200 submissions a day mostly the T i n y u r l (dont wanna give them any plublicity) now since I added that I get about 100 a day and half are still junk. Should I just remove it and make it payed? would that reduce the amount?

Even though having no Captcha is better for me the submitter, i would say i find your above example very very fair & everyone using Captcha should switch to your method or similar...

No, it's not even nearly on the same scale.

One of the major problems with the popular image captchas is that they haven't given any thought to which letters and numbers can be easily confused. So you end up wondering whether it's a 1 or a I, a 5 or an S, a 0 or an O, and so on. No matter how good your eyesight, they are easy to get wrong.

It seems like with the image captcha it would have been so simple to just eliminate those letters that get confused with numbers AND those letters that it's hard to tell to capitalize or not.

I think the math problems are the way to go, as long as they allow for folks to type the answer. I'm looking forward to playing with the script from the folks at http://www.cantufind.com/forum/index.php as this is only one of the things they are including in their new script.

I haven't seen the math problem deal anywhere - but it sounds like it would be a heck of a lot less annoying than those bloody captcha's :)

I've just read the last load of replies on captcha, I'm not just plugging my directory script but you really should have a go of it to see how clever the captcha we have is! You can have 1+1 = 2 or is it 3? kind of thing, you can have questions like 'what colour is an orange?' to what is this picture of? with the ability to upload graphics to support this of course. If your a serious directory owner, then you simply must come and try this out. It will put a full stop to bots and spammers period.

I can get em right I would say 90%of the ime as long as it isn't too skewed.

I tend to turn mine off during night hours when people tend to drink more.

Some captcha images are just too hard to read. I get about 90% correct.

The thing that bugs me the most about captchas is the ones that clear the entire form if you enter it incorrectly.

I have the worst luck on those damn things.

I tend to always get confused between an i and a j, and other similar looking letters like that. I usually have to type it in twice to get it right :p
