I'm new to all of this

    what is the best way at promoting a site like this? should I be submitting it to directories, or paying for links on directories? If anyone has any info please PM me, thanks

    You can do both. Submit it to free directories and choose paid strong ones or paid that offers extra incentives for your site. There are lot of free and stable directories to choose from.

    For paid you can start by choosing some in my sigs which offer deeplinks.

    what would be the benefits of creating a directory myself? Wouldn't that look kind of shady to my customers?

    Adwords if you have enough money. Otherwise, SEO. It realy all depends on the budget you got and how fast you want to see the results, ROI.
