I find that meta tag analysis is very important. Updating meta content and names is very helpful. Also, good descriptive content of what your site is about is important. Make sure that your description is not too long or too short. I've seen descprtions of sites that just say "forex", and they think that's all they'll need.

Backlinks are definitely the name of the game. Just one-way links, though. Reciprocal links are much easier to get, but they certainly have a negative effect on your PR.
