IM - Instant Messenger Question

I have a question about Instant Messengers. I currently have my own search, but I want to add an instant messenger as extra feature to my site. But I don't know a lot about how to host the instant messenger, or how much server space. Basically my question is, can I just host the instant messenger on site (server) for be to download it and use? And how much of the server will be used up if a lot of people are using it? Lastly, do I need a special server to offer instant messenger for my visitors?

    Thanks for your help!

In my opinion a messenger server can leave your site vulnerable and if yo really wanted to talk to someone why not just add them on msn or AIM

Good idea. I will take your advice on that. Especially the point about leaving my server vulnerable. Thanks .pure.

you can make an I.M. on your page using Ajax. It also offers a free I.M. sample, all you have to do is download it. search for it on the net..:p

You know Dvae, i actually though about that. in fact i have downloaded one. but I am still confused on how the users will be able to invite their friends or at least add their friends. that point was a little bit gray when i was looking through the ajax messenger. thanks for the advice though. i will loook into it some more.

What is your engine, and is it popular enough to even put more stuff on?

sorry, yes. well i don't know how much traffic it has to have to be popular, but it's getting up there. It has only been around 2.5 months only. i started getting good traffic last month about 3000 unique visits, and it's growing fast. this month, it has already passed 7000. although my ranking might not show it, the changes from 3 months ago to now might (that's if u were to check my ranking).
