I'm having issues with mailman delivering to PacBell.net and ATT.net

    I mistakenly have a hosting program with HostGator. I have an open ticket now for 3 weeks without any action. Maybe the hive mind of this group and can help.

    I set up a non-profit website with a member list of 72 members through mailman. Everyone is getting the message with the exception of att.net and pacbell.net.

    The 5 users of att.net and pacbell.net keep bouncing and not receiving messages.

    I think this may be due to a blacklisted IP address; however I haven't found a way to verify that domain is the issue. I did see some .dk website say it's blacklisted. Should I be concerned?

    The IP is 192.185.48.130 and domain sanjosegardenclub dot com.

    Any thoughts on how to resolve?

    Thanks for the tip; however I've done this twice. I feel they are not approving since the IP is blocked and not the domain. The IP is shared with may websites.

    Pretty much, welcome to why shared hosting sucks. You may simply have to move the site, but since you can get decent VPS now for $20 or less (way, way lest if you can manage your own hosting) that really shouldn't be an issue.

    If you're on shared hosting, there is damned little HostGator can do to help you other than try randomly bouncing you around their servers; but since they are one of the cheaper hosts - almost at throwaway prices - it's unlikely that ANY of their IP addresses haven't been blacklisted by this point.

    It's why if you're going to be handling your own mailings, I say that having your own private dedicated IP addy that nothing else is trying to use is a must-have.

    In many ways it's a matter of getting what you pay for.

    I've requested the block domain to be released; however with HostGator placing domain on a place that has blocked IP they apparently won't release.

    I have contacted chat 3 times now, and with an minimum wait time of 40 minutes the only response I get is that the ticket will be resolved in the order it was received... again, the ticket has been open 3 weeks. They do say they have a back log... Duh!


    This is a non-profit website and I see no need for them to pay for a private IP due to HostGator's complete incompetency. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll run this by the board members as an quicker option. Sad.


    Thanks for the tips. This gives me many options to report back as solutions to mark this website as "complete" and most likely will mover servers. I found several with free migration and lower rates. I just been recommending HostGator for 9 years. I'm done with them.

    You can run into the blacklisted IP problem on any shared web host. I have seen it on all kinds of shared hosts, not just HG. Personally, I think it is stupid to blacklist an entire IP because of spam, especially when the IP can be a shared server or the IP address could be re-allocated to someone else in the future that had nothing to do with the spam. Blacklisting is an over reaction, and I think spammers are smart enough to change IPs from time to time so I don't see how it can have much of an impact. From what I have read, it is not always easy for hosting companies to get IPs removed from blacklists. It can take some time for them to get it accomplished. I have also read that people clicking the "spam" button on newsletters they subscribed to instead of unsubscribing can help get an IP blacklisted. So you can run to another host and you might have that same problem again one day.

    I'd never heard of mailman so did a google and the first two results looked pretty important

    I've written my own CRM and use mandrill to send emails - they throttle too but seem to be good. It's the backend of mailchimp.

    Sometime around 2000 we had a mailing list that we'd email occasionally and the AOL emails would bounce. I debugged, tested, did everything possible to find out why they weren't going through. We decided we would have to live without AOL customers - pretty tricky when they'd email us for support and our replies back to them were never received. I swear that one day someone rebooted a router/hub/something and hey presto our emails suddenly started going through.

    For those of you looking for new hosting service, please don't even consider HostGator. It's been 33 days of an open ticket since I'm on this shared blacklisted IP address. Lossers!

    Word of warning, that's par for the course on 99.99% of shared hosting plans... Really at this point I don't understand why anyone would go with shared hosting when you could just learn to set up a server yourself (or follow a guide on HowToForge) and go with a 'clean no hand-holding' VPS for almost the same money.
