What exactly is a proxy? I have seen countless threads/sigs talking about them and Wikipedia still confuses me on this.
I feel stupid b/c I am very internet savvy but have no idea what this is.
    Thanks.

A proxy is an anonmymous server, which can help you browse the internet anonymously!

means if you want to hide your ip, you can use a proxy

'Proxy' is a word that explains itself. Think of somebody marking you attendance in your office as proxy (act on behalf of somebody) while you are on leave. The same applies for web servers.

For example your country might be blocked by some sites. Although you cannot directly access the site, but can be accessed indirectly through a proxy website, located in another country. You connect to proxy website and the proxy server pulls the data from website you want to access.

People talk about proxy because they are mostly easy to setup , to advertise (nothing time consuming ) and pretty good for making money with adsense and others.

Google can easily find out if you try to use a proxy to click your ads. They use more then your ip address to identify you.

Proxies generally bring out a lot of clicks from other people. Why they do this I don't know, but they do so the money rolls in :p

If you want to learn what a proxy is, just use one. You'll be able to access any sites that were previously blocked to you easy as :D

    "do they cost money "
i m quite new to them , but i think if they become really busy they can cost you money in bandwidth ! depending on your hosting.

Hostgator say you cant run poxies on their shared packages , but i decided to try and see what happened , they worked , resources are not over used YET and they have brought in a couple of dollars in adense in about a week.

they seem to run on PHP and can be installed in minutes , well mines is , you can get CGI ones to an i think you can get them for free ( th program )not the domain or hosting ...... a guy called KARAN here seesm to run good deals.

They seem to be uite viral in their use by people , and can build traffic quickly as the website name egts passed aound schools and workplaces but once the network admin spots a lot of use on one site they can get banned so traffic can drop as quickly as quick as it builds so i have read.

    best of luck

    PAUL

dont feel embarassed, the only way you will find anything out is by asking. I also didnt know the specifics of what a proxy is, so you are not alone!

No, the proxy scripts are available open source. You can see a good list of proxy scripts in www.best-php-scripts.com under proxy scripts. :)

You will need a half decent host to run this though, some hosts do not allow proxy hosting because of the resources it may take up.
