Anyone should be aware of the TOS (you can't proceed without checking the "I agree" option most of the time).
Mostly that crap in the TOS doesn't help one bit; it says something to the extend of that the server CPU on shared systems/VPSs is used on a fair-use basis; how does a normal user know when he is or is not 'fair-using' a CPU. That is total BS: either a hoster should give clear guidelines AND tools to see if you are abusing or whatever, or they shouldn't count it at all. I am all for the Amazon.com way of working; you prepay 'units' of usage; CPU, storage, bandwidth and you see just what you used and how many credits you have left. No banning, no BS; just clear and simple. But comparing Hostgator to Amazon is like comparing a rubber duck to a bar of gold.
If you are sending emails from a shared server and IP chances are they won't make it to the inbox anyway. You need to get a vps and set up your own mail server, or use a dedicated email marketing solution such as Getresponse/EmailAces/iContact etc for around $10 per month. Andrew
I am in the same boat. My 2 sites been down for almost 24 hours. I just got a temporary host but need to get into hostgator cpanel to get my files, mysql to move to new host. I sent out a email to say merry xmas and the thanks i get is suspended. Also i have very limited to no time to get this resolved because of the holiday's. I'll be MIA for awhile.
I noticed that your website on your sig experience the same thing to. Well... we have to wait and see. So far its been more than more than 12 hours...
But how would this help? They all have those limitations of kicking you off for no reason (at least not obviously breaking the TOS).
Those you having this problem call hostgator: 1-866-96GATOR Their lines are up 24/7, so they can help you get your account unlocked within a few minutes. I've called them several times over the years and have never had a bad experience with their support lines. Stop sitting there wondering what is going on. You are paying for a service and it's not being delivered. Call them and find out why, otherwise it's just speculation. I would bet that it's because you exceed the 200/hour limit, but there could be other reasons being the suspension. Not doing anything about this isn't going to get you anywhere. I've asked Hostgator before about this email issue, and their limit is 200/hour on their shared hosting plans. You can verify this with them over the phone, so set your program to LESS than that limit (as you'll always have people joining your list, which could bump you up to 175 per hour, plus unsubscribe requests and whatever else). Most hosting companies get really strict with this policy at this time of the year, because of the last minute shopping promotions that are run. Preventing this in the future can be done by getting an AWeber.com account, or an account with any of the other email service providers suggested above. These ESP's have their own dedicated email servers, you do not have to worry about these limits and it doesn't require you to move your hosting, just your email. Kwaku - you are being very hippocritical. You say people only promote hostgator here because they are affiliates and stand to make money, then you pitch your own hosting solution. And for the record, most people here who suggest hostgator isn't because they are affiliates, they are just happy with the service recieved. I have seen very few hostgator affiliate links posted here. In fact, unless it's a sig link it's against DP's TOS to post an affiliate link in a post.
Hello, Please read http://www.hostgator.com/mailpolicy.shtml Like almost every hosting company in the world we have mail rules in place. Here's a few reasons why..... 1. Sending thousands of emails in one second can cause major load issues on the servers. 2. Even if mail isn't spam when you send to enough people someone is always going to report it as spam. When your reported as spam the whole server can be blacklisted causing problems for everyone. 3. In some cases even if nobody reports your message as spam you can still get the server blacklisted. If you send to many emails in to short of a period to say yahoo they will blacklist the server from the volume alone being suspicious. By spacing out an email every few seconds this will avoid you from being suspended and hopefully keep the server from being blacklisted. Please let me know if you have any questions. We definitely don't want to see you leave since you would have this same problem almost anywhere you go if your not rate limiting.
I agree with Hostgator reply bot. If you go to any other shared hosting you'll be kicked if you send a thousand emails to sendmail. If you do it on your dedicated box, you'll not be kicked but your server will be unresponsive for some time, it may even need a hard reboot. In the end, your messages won't get through. You need to send less messages and more frequently. There's no point leaving Hostgator, it won't solve your problem.
I've had the same issue few days ago (December 2007) - Glad the support was kind and put it back in, but I'm unable to send my weekly newsletter to my 6500 members at MyLOL :\
I am also a very disapponted with hostgator, my account is suspended for over load, and I am continuously try to resolve the issue but nobody can help except abuse admin, and there is no way to reach abuse admin except email, further discussion lead to the fact that there is only 1 abuse admin and almost 50+ abuse tickets and it can take upto 24 hours to get your site back. at the moment I am in hurry, and a quick note/advise for hostgatoer user is ,"Always keep a backup host if you are using hostgator, very unreliable in terms of support, they don't take your business as a serious matter"
I had a similar problem with Hostgator. Not because I was sending too many emails, but because I was getting too many replies through the cpanel webmail. Right, so, I send out a newsletter to, probably around 50-60 people, and within 24-36 hours, I get around 250 replies directly from this newsletter, or from spam bots and humans using the contact forms on my sites. So, how did we fix it? I'm not going to tell you, because you're a Man United fan, and as much as my boss is also a United fan, I'm not telling!
Do you host your own autoresponder on that server? If yes, it is wise for you to subscribe to 3rd party autoresponder like aweber or getresponse.
Hostgator is amazing. Best hosting company ever. Why not read the TOS or ask them before sending bulk emails? You're paying like 10$ A month. You get what you pay for. Go buy a dedicated server if you want to send bulk emails, or use a mailing list company to do it.
