I'm creating a website that will provide information and have ads for revenue.

    Hello everyone,

I'm seeking to create a website that provides information regarding my niche (literature) and will contain ads on each page to collect revenue. I'm wondering what's the best way to go about doing this; I have already bought Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 and am preparing to register a domain and hosting with Hostgater. I was wondering if I should use something like Wordpress or if I should just start from scratch.

Another question I have is, I have acquired a free template from a site, but how do I go about using it within my website? Do I just set it as the background image and put my links into the slots of the tabs by using things such as padding-left:157px; and try and accurately put all my links everywhere?

    Thanks a ton everyone.

If you are new to web design then you'll likely to find just jumping in into Dreamweaver difficult

If you are interested in Wordpress then take a look at their free hosting solution: http://wordpress.com/

If you set up a site you can then take a look at the admin section and familiarise yourself with it.

Unless your template is a Wordpress theme then you won't be able to use it with that blogging platform

The template I'm using is a psd. I'm wondering though, how do I incorporate the psd into all my htmls? If I create a ul or something for the list at the top, do I have to have the <ul> in every html file? Also, do I just set the template as the background image?

Additionally, the template doesn't rescale correctly. I have a large monitor, so the template looks pretty small on my screen. How do you go about creating a template that is optimal for every monitor spec?

    Thanks

You will really need to learn HTML and CSS to code up that PSD file. May be its better if you get a coded HTML template or a CMS theme that you can directly use on your server, add content etc without having to code.

I suggest you start with Wordpress and have some free themes while you learn the tools of trade better.

If you've never made a website before, setting up your domain and hosting will be enough to boggle your mind.. without trying to learn HTML.
Go with Wordpress and a free theme. For what you want to do, you don't need to know how to write HTML. You'd be better off spending time writing content for a Wordpress powered site.
    :) Welcome to DP :)
