I'm Confused

I have a online game website that has been running for over a year now, everything was going fine except for a few months ago.

I usually have over 2500 game plays every day, then this started decreasing to 200 per day. Although the amount of unique visitors is the same, I'm getting less game plays. Not only that but I'm making much less profit from my advertisements now, like $5 a month.

What do you think is happening? How can my traffic suddenly decrease by over 75%?

    Have you been updating content?

Have you been collecting those visitors by opt-in subscriptions and emailing them about updates?

Have you been tracking incoming/out going traffic?

Are you promoting less now than you had before?

Those are some of the questions you should be asking yourself.

You could be right. I haven't been updating games too much, but how can that lead to my guests dropping by over 75% in less than a week?

It could also be due to a drop in your serps. Perhaps other websites are outranking you and taking your former visitors.

Maybe you dropped in SERPS, or maybe you were getting game plays from kids at school who are now out for the summer.

True. I remember some time ago I used to be in the first 3 pages of results when you searched 'shooting games' or 'thing thing arena'. But now, it's nowhere near that.

But how did I drop like that?

Google is constantly updating their index with new sites and algos. So you have to stay on top of your rankings.

Do you use Google Analytics to track your traffic? If you look through your past reports, see where most of your traffic came from. Was it search results, or links from other sites? Have the other sites removed their backlinks? Was one keyword providing most of your traffic?

Find the trends in your traffic and then you will be able to see where you are losing your traffic.

It seems that you have an decreased in the SERP which causes the drop in revenue..

Try to update your content more often and use link bait strategies. You may also want to buy some reviews in related blogs :)

Only a fall in the search engines can explain this. Try using free resources like Blogger and Squidoo, especially Squidoo. Squidoo lenses get ranked very well and very quickly at the moment. They will give you good backlinks which can only help. You can get more backlinks by writing articles and submitting them to high PR directories such as Ezinearticles, GoArticles and Article City.

Bit off-topic, but I got curious: can you give URL to the game? (or PM me) I'd like to see it :)

You should get other sites to link to you using your target keywords like shooting games' or 'thing thing arena'. Also, try and start a banner program for your site and promote it on very related websites. It will surely bring you traffic and the links will help you get the rankings in SERPs too.
