I'm Confused about PR.

    Hi guys,

Im confused about the whole PR deal. I use prchecker.info to calculate the sites page rank. It started off N/A then it was found and went to 0 and then after 20 days it went to 1. I now have about 5 times the amount of quality links and its about 25 days later but my PR hasnt gone up again.

What confuses me is that Ive been reading posts that the pr only gets updated (for viewing) at different times of the year is this true? I appreciate that the PR is updated all the time but hidden from view from google.

All my pages have the same title on yahoo as well do you think that this is a problem?

If anyone could clarify this through their experience that would be fantastic!

    Cheers

Yes you are right in that the toolbar PR only updated several times a year on a web-wide basis. The exception to that is that you can get penalized and lose all your PR at any time if you do anything spammy. The actual PR updates all the time, but Google does not publish the actual PR. So for your toolbar PR to update, you just have to have 2 or 3 months.

It is a problem if all of your pages have the same title. You should have unique titles and meta tags for every page on your site. This helps get all of your pages indexed and ranked. It won't affect your PR at all though.

Thanks man, What about web bassed pr calculators like prchecker.info should they be accurate all the time or only updated with the toolbar? Im guessing all the time since a few weeks ago I went from 0 to 1 and there wasnt a toolbar update.

    Cheers

In my opinion you should not concentrate on PR, rankings are more important. Yes, PR might affect rankings as well but not that much as it was in the past.

PR is really unpredictable. Actually, I received a PR 5 without doing any link building in one of my blogs before but it suddenly dropped to 0 after a month. Anyway, I suggest you focus to traffic, 'coz that will bring you $$$ :) Don't put too much effort on the green candy bar of your browser.

I was using the pr to estimate my rankings in the search engine. How else should I calculate how high my site will rank?

I know I should be looking at maximizing my search engine ranking but im not sure how to check if Im improving for different keywords or results.

    Cheers

PR won't guarantee you top ranking. There's other factors that affect your SERP value after PR, such as optimization and backlinks.

A site with good traffics usually has good PR but a site with good PR does not mean the site will have good traffics.

Another problem is every one can see your site PR but not many people know your site's traffics.

Do you have the Firefox addon to view pr values? You could use this one.

However, PR is not what you need to focus. PR does not guarantee top 10! If you are concerned about serps and traffic, make sure you are targeting adequate keywords, add content and build links. If you work hard enough, you will see the results eventually.

P.S. To check your performance, sign up for Google Webmaster Tools.

The pagerank shown in the toolbar is a snapshot of what your pagerank was at one particular time. Google only takes 4 snapshots a year. There are many PR5 sites that show to be PR5 but are no longer PR5 within google's algorithms. There are many PR0 or PR1 sites that are actually much higher in google's internal algorithms, but they won't show this increased pagerank until google does another "snapshot". It will be another few months before google updates again - and if you've done alot of backlinking chances are you will have a higher pagerank once google takes their next snapshot.

mdamin76 has brought up a good point here. People may not realize that a lot of high ranking sites don't necessary make it to the top page of Google for their favored keyword and this is because their site may have developed it's links an hence PR from the site's name or some other anchor text that is not relevant to their favored keyword. For optimal keyword position in search engines it's important to harbor effective strong backlinks with the right anchor (favored keyword) in the hypertext.

This is how to optimize your PR for authority placement in the SERP's. I do this for expired or parked sites that I buy, call it forensic SEO if you will, I trace the sites past anchor text's (keywords) from backlink checker tools then create content associated to them, and with good success, I get to page 1, 2 or 3 for every page on my blog and raised it from pr3 (at it's time of purchase) to pr5! hope this helps :)

Yes, PR is a bit of a mystery. We think we know most of the algorythm, but not all of it. Google ramins a mystery in some matters.

From what I understand google updates the page rank in their index about every three months. Though backlinks are important and google does use page rank to determine the importance of a website most of your time should be used attempting to enhance your website and building high pr links that are relevant to your website.
