DON'T use a free service like Blogger.

Too easy for them to mark your blog as spam and take it away.

Spend the few $$ to register a domain and get a shared hosting account.

I always keep wondering why experienced marketers keep recommending to newbies that they not use blogger as a getting started platform?

I've been an Internet Marketers for the pass 9 years and an adult webmaster before that and I still have blogger blogs, and free host sites, up today that are both making me money from Adsense, CB, and Amazon.

For those newbies that DON'T have money to get started, or aren't sure if IM is for them and don't want to spend money trying it out, I say Blogger, or a free host like byethost, is perfect. With a free host like Byethost you even get MySQL and PHP so you can install Wordpress.

So go ahead and use one of these platforms JUST TO GET STARTED. Remember, this isn't where your going to make your living but it's great to get a feel for IM, get a list started, and mainly to get some money in your pocket to purchase your own domain and hosting.

If you can't earn money, from FREE sources, to get you started in this business then maybe Internet Marketing isn't for you, or you still need to do some more studying.

The secret to being a great blogger is to constantly add new content. If you can add 3-5 articles a week you will soon get noticed and people will start following you.

I think the secret to a successful blog is writing about a topic you're passionate about. Too many people use money as their primary objective and that ultimately leads to failure. In order to have a sustainable blog with readers (and perhaps revenue), you need to a)find a topic you know quite a bit about or b)find interest in and learn along the way.

SuzieWong is right -- content is also another key component. Without new things to read, you're going to lose your visitors almost instantly. Why would they bookmark your site if you're only posting every few months?

Try also networking with other bloggers. Find blogs similar to your topic and reach out to them. Establishing some kind of partnership/relationship can do you a great deal of good because it leads to free promotion.

    Hope this helps!

One of the most important things to remember about being a blogger is that it is not all about writing what you are passionate about or making sure that you have an eye-catching title. It is not even about marketing your blog all the time. But, it is about interaction. Make sure that your blog has an easy commenting system. Also, if you are using Wordpress, make sure that you use CommentLuv. A lot of bloggers love leaving comments on blogs that let them share a link back to their sites. Make time to reply to every comment, even if just to thank the commenter for taking the time. Form relationships. Believe me, these relationships are the ones that could help you become successful as a blogger.

I advise newbies against using the free blogging services for the following reasons:

    • If they are going to get into blogging for money then they might as well do it right, especially when the upfront cost is so low.
    • Nothing will kill the enthusiasm for a new marketer like putting in the time to build a blog from scratch only to have it taken away by some bot.

Free blogs make sense if you are writing about your family or whatever without intending to monetize anything ... or if you are an experienced marketer using them for testing or blackhat.

This OP didn't sound to me to be either of those.

First of all categorize your choices to write for, chose what you can write on by pouring interest and info at the same time.

My best advice on blogging is to stay consistent in your efforts. Post, promote, and optimize regularly and you'll be on the right track.

If you are not familiar with blogging, I would suggest you start with a free blogger account and start blogging about any topic that you feel expert at. Look around the blogs to get an idea.

What advice are you talking about?
Wordpress- Good for future, if you turn your blog to site.
Blogger- If you start with blogger (Google's blogging platform) Google "helps" you rank better and gets you more traffic. It's a decent platform.

I honestly like Wordpress > Blogger
