Hi everyone. My friends started getting into online businesses and he recommended this forum to me as a good place to start.

I'm a writer, and I'm looking to make money writing articles, ad copy and ebooks.

I hope I'll learn a lot here and make some good contacts and connections.

Any advice on where to start?

    Thanks. :)

    Hi Riversplitter,
I think you came to the right place. There is a high demand for unique content, just look around or start a thread about your offers. Quality content is a big problem for lots of people including myself. What are the themes you know about to write quality articles?

    Thanks monfis!

I've really mostly written in the offline world.

There I translated a book about mysticism, researched and wrote articles about various topics relating to education, wrote a 25pg introduction for a translation, a 15pg booklet about feng shuei, and some articles for a children's magazine.

I also wrote about 6 15 pg courses on various inspirational and self-help topics for an adult education network.

My skills really boil down to research, finding the essential point, organizing information, and simplifying and explaining well.

I was also a teacher for a few years, and I specialized in simplifying and organizing complicated ideas.

I sometimes write opinions and analysis of various current issues for an e-mail list. My most recent article was about energy independence.

How do you think I should market myself online?

Best advice is to google your market that you are looking at getting involved in!

Look into your competition and improve on their structure!

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice.

I also can write about health and fitness. My dad is actually a personal trainer, and I generally like to learn about all kinds of stuff. I'm interested in just about anything, and have a lot of general knowledge about a lot of random things.

Anyway, I'll see what's here. I'm sure it will be helpful.

I don't have a website yet to promote my writing skills. I've been doing freelance writing for a years now, but I'm new to the online market.

What do I need to setup shop?

You think I should make a website. Okay. What should it include? Information about myself, samples, and pricing I assume?

    Thanks.

Anywhere to get more good info about all this?

    Hello -

Position yourself. In other words: Are you a writer who sells the products or a writer who's creative?

The distinction is that as a writer who writes to sell products you aren't looking for a creative edge. You don't need to be in 'the mood' to write.

Creative writers (read: financially poor) tend to be about being creative.

All writing is about writing to sell. That means, your words translating into ideas, messages, thoughts, opinions, validation for your audience.

Once you establish what type of writer you want to be (a creative or a writer who writes to sell) then the decision to write - any niche, any product will then flow.

    To Your Success,

    Nicholas

I'm not really into writing in the creative, artsy, just for fun kind of way.

I'm into good content, good ideas and opinions, and I'm looking to make a full time business out of it.

I've already been writing part-time for a while. I mostly did longer projects, like 15-20 pages.

Well, I never did these kind of jobs before.

The kind of writing I've been doing is very well researched, so there is as much if not more time spent researching than writing.

I get $600 for about 15 pages. And $1000 for 20-25 pages. That's about $40 dollars a pg, which is about 500 words.

But it seems like there is a lot more low-end, low-quality writing going on online, with much less research. A simple article is usually not as good as what goes into a print book or course.

I prefer writing better work, but I guess I would write a simpler article without the research. Since it takes a lot less time, I would charge $20 or $25 dollars, since my writing is still top notch.

Am I way out of line with these prices? It seems like online writers are a dime-a-dozen if you don't mind the poor quality.

Offline writers must be good enough to justify all of the cost of printing and distributing a real hard copy. This means that the writing and the content has to be great.

Its true that you can monetize cheep content online, because of the low overhead. But do you really want your site to be some fringe tabloid?

If you have killer, high-quality content, people will really hang around your site.

If you have poor content, you'll stay on the fringe.

Maybe I need to market my services to gurus.

Is anyone here interested in very high quality writing? I mean something print worthy?

    Hi River

there is a market for your quality writing, but it will take some time to find it. You will find numerous low cost writers of 400 word articles for $6 (you are probably horrified by that). Most are "farmed" article writing, produced by educated writers from outer reaches from the former British Empire. Usually a fair job reflective of the price paid. (and no offence intended to my friends from the outer reaches, they gotta make a crust as well)

You will need to show your point of differeintiation, get some reviews, and testimonials.

I use wordpress on about 8 sites/blogs, to promote my affiliate sales. Wordpress is so easy to use, so flexible and there are plenty of WP disciples.

a great thread here to learn about WPress
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=947875

You can start with free hosted version, at wordpress.com Once you get a hang of it, you will need to get your own hosted version ($10 a month for up to 100 sites)

So you need to get a site to start describing who you are and what you do and making your presence felt. There is lots and lots to learn. Digital Point has been helpful to me, as had StomperNet free stuf, and this free ebook...
