I'm a Vendor.... and I'm doing my own tracking!

    Guys

Just for your information I am doing an experiment on Regace.com. I have installed my own tracking system that sends a cookie to the user and then sees what happens. Using this system I will find out:

    1. Where my non-affiliate sales come from
    2. Which affiliates run which sites
    3. Which sites, rather than affiliates generate the best sales

It sends a cookie to the browser then adds a row to a database everytime the user with that cookie does something, recording the referer, IP address, user agent and timestamp each time. Now when a product is purchased if the user has a cookie I know where they originally came from.

Using this information I can better help affiliates with their questions and to make more money.

I'll let you know how it goes, and this may become an open-source script at some point.

    :)

Not sure your best affiliates will be happy about that, you are basically going to learn how they are converting and then use that to help your other affiliates?

Cant you just see all of this (apart from which affiliate sites are which) through Google Analytics? If you dont use it id really recommend it, it shows you all of this and more

    **Bingo.

All the data you're tracking is also easily tracked by getting a statcounter/freecounter and putting the script on your sales/thank you/other pages.

Bigger aff's will still blank the ref. and you will rarely know how they got there, and as above most won't want you knowing/seeing who's doing best/why, and diluting their efforts.

None the less, yes it's good practice to have your own analytics for all your sites above/beyond CB and GA... paramount tracking does rule - just be careful how you go about it all and what you use it for.

Well the way I will use the info is to help affiliates by telling them more details of where there sales come from. Many affiliates have a number of sites set up and I can tell them which ones are working best. I wont share information from one affiliate to another, or try to copy their exact method myself.

But I will learn a lot of useful stuff about the market place. Now I have started collecting this data I can't see how I could have lived without it. :)

I do see the potential benefits (available in other ways, though?), but I'm afraid this is right. Some affiliates may not mind it. My concern here, in your position, would be that the ones who do mind it are very likely to be the 20% of affiliates who make the 80% of sales, you know? Just thinking aloud ...

Thanks Alexa, ironically it's my top affiliates that are asking for this - and they are very excited by it :). However like I said I am not going to give my other affiliates information that will sabotage the top affiliates, and believe me I have learnt a few things from this tracking on how my top affs are making money!

But my overall long term success depends on these top affiliates and I won't upset their apple cart.

Where I will use the information is if I want to promote a different product in a different sector, as what works here could work elsewhere.

Getting as much tracking information leads to an informed business owner. I agree NOT telling lower affiliates what the big boys are doing HOWEVER I would reproduce their efforts possibly into your "affiliate page" so others can get a better step by step on how to become successful. Not telling them EXACTLY to do what your super affiliates do BUT a general rundown because in the end marketing isn't some secret, it is just a ton of hard work with quality content.

Why? Are you going to qualify that with a reason?

Or is this comment just to up your post count?
