I'm looking at creating a niche directory, i'm not really a programming person so I need an easy method of creating one... But before I start, are they a good way of generating income if you have the right niche?
You can use a directory script, the link in my sig leads to one. Yeah their a good way of generating income, for general, niche, addon for an established site etc Easy to get setup.
No directory type, niche, general etc or directory script will make you money ( if any ), these items are inert, can not think, build themselves or ring your cash register. for that it needs a human factor, so can you make money now ? or at least hope to. Have you read the 100 reasons not to start a directory at the top of the page ( sticky ) ? ? second thoughts there's hundreds of crap new directories launched each week, perhaps they can make you some $ after all. Good luck with your project.
To make some income from your directory, the first thing you shall do is to increase the pr of the directory, no matter it's niche or general.
The right niche - yep this is a common mistake by even the experienced directory owner. There's no such thing as the right niche with the Gold or the Secrets - and it's the public that chooses the directory they use. You cannot think that by picking a popular area, that millions will suddenly swarm to your site - it takes so much more to succeed. Now you have learnt something useful, all you need now is to think of that big money making idea. Nobody will do this for you. Good luck
If you have a good link building campaign you should get a PR in the next update. Next one should come around July.
There are several ways to monetize a directory. I feel it's easier to do with niche directories. Pick a niche that you care about and that you know about. Adding content in addition to the listings will help you build a community that uses your directory (rather than just webmasters looking for a listing). If you get those pieces in place then you can make money with some of the following. 1. Affiliate links 2. Advertising 3. Featured listings
