I'm about to set up a competition website, offering £1000/month to the first person who identifies a mystery celeb from a series of clues and parts of their face. Entrants click on boxes to reveal clues- some boxes reveal an affiliate ad. Entrants have to register their details to enter. Question is- how much revenue can I generate from personal data, and what is a good affiliate scheme for this type of website (every entrant is GUARANTEED to click on the boxes)? Also, advice on marketing would be appreciated. (limited budget to start with). Any other ways to generate revenue? Many thanks.
If you're doing this in order to sell personal information on people, make it VERY clear on the signup form that you're going to do that. Other revenue streams for this kind of site could be product affiliate schemes of PPC ads.
many thanks for the advice. The concept of my comp worked extremely well in the printed media, where I was charging entrants to guess via sms. This mechanism does not work on the net I would make it very clear in the t's and c's that the competition is compliant with the data protection act. How valuable is data? how much revenue can be generated from affiliates schemes/ppc? I presume it is entirely dependent on the traffic? Any tips on effective marketing strategy? btw, I was very impressed with your website (esp as I'm a Londoner!)
I can't really help you with the data gathering question as I've never looked at a site from this angle before. I'd have thought you could contact some companies that buy these sorts of lists for a definitive answer to that one. As you say, it's dependant on traffic but a lot of money can be made. There are a few guys on here making $1000 per day though Adsense alone. Marketing strategy? My best tip is to try to get traffic from lots of different sources, look at SEO, online/offline advertising, PPC, press releases etc.
