My message will be short Google makes most of its profit by showing you ads in the search result, When you push "I'm feeling lucky" you dont see ads, that's what motivated me to read more about this feature and why google designed it... According to a study by Tom Chavez of "Rapt" this feature costs Google $110 Million dollars a year as 1% of all searches use this feature and bypass all advertising. Why google remains this button? Just because most search engines have one button, and having two buttons, google shows that they are at the top of the game Google received a trademark on the phrase "I'm feeling lucky" in the US on November 30, 2004. source: wikipedia.
Research has shown that people feel removing the button reduces the overall Google experience... Somehow. Either way though I think it's more about being a nice company - social responsibility and all that I also don't agree with the 1% of searches using the 'I'm feeling lucky' feature, I think it's probably a lot less unless Google have officially released this figure.
no guys, i thought it too, BUT You know the feature in firefox? if you type something in adressbar, something like, MOVIES, or GOOGLE, firefox Feels Lucky the term, check it. Not only firefox uses this feature in the software, plus some people dont want to type in the big adress of a website, but they know for sure that website is 1# on google and they will be lucky if they type something like, "imdb transformers" ... or "local cinema name" transformers
/\ /\ Yep Absolutely, where you been hiding?? /\ /\ Re. the OP, I have never and will never use that feature, and I really dont see why anyone would? Mind you, I suppose people "stumble" about aimlessly as well...
Recently saw a very creative abuse of this feature in a spam mail. The spammer directly linked to a "I'm feeling lucky" search showing his page as the only result...
I think they have a reason for keeping that button there. That makes people want to be #1 in Google. How much would you pay if all "feeling lucky" searches for the keyword "movies" or "sex" get redirected to your site? Huh? I bet a lot
