It won't hurt you nearly as bad to mess up meta tags now as it would have 5 years ago. The idea is sort of to try to get away from meta tags because it's such an easy way to rank for things that you have no business getting rank for, and keyword stuffing of tags made the searchengines look for alternative ways of ranking sites.

Also, it is a very easy method to steal competitor keywords from their meta. kind of cheating, but a lot of people check meta tags of sites that are not optimized, which means their keywords are being wasted

by meta tags, if you mean title and description, then yes, without these your site will perform very badly.

from your English and grammar skills in this post you may also consider that google likes good spelling and grammar .. and is rumored to down grade (drop ranking) of sites if they dont comply to a reasonable level of English. You may like to enlist help if you your site has links pointing to it but you still dont rank as expected.

Just to clarify, the title tag really isn't a meta tag. The title is an essential HTML element of the page, while meta tags are optional.

As far as ranking, it's been about 6-7 years since Google used them in the ranking algo. On the other hand, I consider the title tag as probably the most important few words there are concerning SEO...And it's been this way since at least 1996.

If you messed with meta title, description and other info related tags, it could mess. Especially if it has over-stuffed keywords or very irrelevant information.
