Just wanted to ask for an amazon affiliate store, if your domain name pick is not available for .com, what would be your next second choice?

Probably a longer .com, maybe .net. However, I'm using short brandable subdomains. This way you can have yourkeyword.shortname.com.

If dot com not available then, I will suggest you use .net instead of .org .

Did some research on the topic found different opinions, they are kinda outdated 2008-2010 it seems that there is an ongoing debate about .net vs .org I am really confused now, did anybody had a personal experience with this?

Most of it is common sense, would you rather have bookclub.org or mytopbestbookclub.com ? A short, memorable, and easy to spell domain name is always the ideal. If the dot com is taken, then make sure it's undeveloped, the last thing you want to do is compete with an existing website of the same name.

Think of a website name, google it, if "websitename.tld" isn't in any of the top search results then just register any extension and it'll make no difference.

disclaimer: there is a general trend for people to type in "bookclub.com" when your site is "bookclub.org", however, 95% of people looking for the website specifically, direct traffic, will either google "bookclub" (without the domain extension) or save it to their bookmarks.

for the second choice for me , i will pick .net . Because domain registrar believe that .net will be the second famous domain extension and not much left for the .net like .com.
If i only target specific country, i will look for country domain name which will help me rank better in the country search result.

Any common extension should work actually (net, org, info, biz, us for US market, even co or ws). If you don't rely on direct traffic though (which is pointless I think).

I have a theory that the content of the site is more important now than the domain name. I would pick something with two words, easy to remember, etc...

Think most people would agree .com, .net and .org in that order.

Although if you are targeting a specific region it may be worth looking at some ccTLDs, i.e. .co.uk .ch, .de etc.

You could also try .co and .info.

.co in particular does come at a cost but has great potential and is gaining popularity all the time!
