If you have multiple sitemaps & submited a Sitemap Index to Google, do you need to also submit the individual sitemap files?
Thanks for the response. Google has already indexed a few of these links. Are you penalized for submitting the same links in a sitemap index and a sitemap?
I'm assuming this discussion is JUST about submitting an XML sitemap to Google, not a more traditional sitemap page. Google now lets you submit multiple sitemaps, subdivided by site section. You can take an existing sitemap and chop it up into smaller ones. You probably won't get penalized as long as you don't start spamming them. But be careful about duping links across sitemaps - it could cause a lot of confusion on Google's part, which could lead to unintentional loss of some pages.
I use a dynamic site map on my site, so as more content/blogs etc... are added the site map updates. In turn google then downloads this site map every couple of days and indexes. Maybe this is an option for you.
I'm using a dynamic sitemap, too. I have the new links added to the sitemap whenever they're posted. Another question-do I have to submit a Sitemap Index if I submit all of the sitemaps individually? At this stage, since I'm having trouble getting anything indexed, I like looking at each file in Google Webmaster Tools and seeing how many urls from each file was indexed-to try to troubleshoot.
