I'm wondering what others do if they recieve a website submission which is submitted into a wrong category, or could be moved to a lower level category? Do you just move it without notifying the owner? What do you do if the owner complains that they want it in the one category they submitted to because of PR etc? Lol Just abit curious of what other people do in these situations Terry
Do you mean if you accepted it in a certain category then later moved it? To me if it was a free submission it doesnt matter much to me, if they submitted to the wrong category in the first place its their fault. Alot of times people submit to top level categories to get on higher pr page.. if im in a good mood ill move it for them or just decline it. Now if it was a paid submission, i would contact them first and explain why it shouldnt be in that category.
This made me think of creating a mod for this!(Bot) Reading the website's description or title and moving them into current category! I am currently doing a mod that will allow you to approve by categories(almost finished) i.e you can choose any category and approve the pending links only in that category!
I have clearly mentioned in my submission guidelines that " We can move your site in appropriate category" Though, while moving I select nearest category with PR
I move links around all the time. You have to do this as a directory grows, or else it ends up in a confusing mess. For free submissions, the initial acceptance notification should say which category the site is in, but I don't see much point in re-notifying a webmaster if the link is then moved elsewhere once the category gets too crowded. For paid links I think it's different: if a link is moved it's more important to notify the webmaster, just so there isn't any question that the link is still live.
I had a submission to a top category last week and I moved it to the proper category. I notified the submitter and he wasnt happy with it where it was so I refunded him and removed his link.
well people should just pick the right caterogy in the first place if its paid yes then a refund .... sad but true but look at dmoz , if you submit wrong then you have to wait 3 months extra or so
I usually move links if they are not submitted to the appropriate category. So far I did not have a single complaint about this.
I too move links, if they are not submitted in appropriate category.. in case of major movement, I at times let the owner about the same.
i move links if submitted in wrong or top category it clearly states in the guidlines that links will be moved if submitted to wrong category
I also move the links which are in wrong categories. If it's a free submission then it shouldn't be any problem...if it's paid I think everyone should notify the link owner!
i move around links for the benefit of the directory. Make new categories as needed and move links in there. Notifications are not necessary unless you move featured and those owners will contact you if they have a problem
Well, technically you are doing a review of a listing to be placed on your directory, you should be the one ultimately decide where it goes, and according to John from v7n, editorial integrity. To protect the editorial integrity, you have to do what is best for the directory and not always do what the submitter wants. Of course in logical and rational direction. Like this morning I got a review for Colored Contact Lenses and the submitter put it in the Health and Beauty section of my general directory and I have to create a new category for it becos I think its just too generalised a category to put that listing there. So yea. I moved it to the eyecare section. ( generaldirectory is now undergoing renovations whilst still open for business, basically just to tidy the listings and make sure things are categorized properly. ) I guess it will be to the submitter's benefit too.. the category is now more relevant. All IMHO.
Personally, I'l try to submit to a relevant category, but I have no qualms with the submission being listed in a different category if the editor feels it's more appropriate when submitted. I also understand that there's the possibility that listings may get moved or recategorized as a directory grows. I think having the expectation that a listing will remain exactly how and where it was submitted or listed over the life of a directory is a bit of a stretch, unless a directory is dormant. Popular directories and those that do not rely on user submissions will experience growth, and it is inevitable that some listings will be moved. it's my opinion that a directory provides more value to both their visitors and submitters by having well categorized listings. All directories should retain editorial autonomy and integrity and not allow submitters to dictate how and where you're listing web sites within your directory. Anything less and you're just selling text links. Set and maintain your own quality standards and adhere to them when reviewing submissions (paid or otherwise) and expanding your directory. IMHO of course
That's how I handle the case also, in both paid or free. Having the guidelines and making them responsible for it is better and easier. I hope it doesn't sound too harsh But I think that submitters have their responsibility to read the guidelines.
Personally, I think you can make everything clear in your submission guide, you can reserve the right to move them
I had a similar question some days ago but I was asking about sites that only send keywords on the description. So I have edited my guidelines and now I aclare that I can edit the listing and/or move to the right category.
