If you had $500/Month to spend on a server...

    Hello there,
I have used GoDaddy´s fastest server option, however it is too slow for our site.
Now I can spend $500/month before tax on a server,
It has to have a 1Gbit connection out, be located in the US and perform like the devil!

The server uses MySQL and may have over 1000 concurrent connections.
    Which company can provide that?

Now I am asking you, if you were in my shoes, what would you get?

If I would have THAT quantity of traffic ( I am gettong steadily TOWARD it ) then I would above all focus to find my BOTTLE-NECK ...!

where is your current system's limit ?
    is it mySQL
    or HDD access
    or CPU

there are more options than just buying more expensive

    options like
    - really much more RAM per server 4GB is for normal traffic
    - eventually split your traffic into 2 normal priced servers

example: I have one server with 2 sata drive that normally work as raid but i can use them as 2 separate drives to reduce load on HDD if necessary. price per YEAR .. some 700$ !
hence having one "master server" and "outsource" some data traffic or db on an extra server with dual drives and split data to BOTH drives

overall your 500 $/m sound heavy - but if your traffic is far in excess of 100'000 uv / day then it might be normal because THEN your adsense also is into several TEN thousand $/m to cover all.

if CPU is your problem - then options would be
switch to dual 64 bit AMD
use 2 servers ( as a.m.) and split CPU load
use more than 4 or more CPU per server

but any of above only makes sense if you first analyze your real needs to find your bottleneck of your current system. then you KNOW what part of your extension to focus on - may be at far less $ than scheduled now.

i had bad experience with softlayer, you also can read the review on WHT and FWS.
I would recommend you go with iweb8,theplanet and cari.net
they are the expert in dedicated server and with $500,you can really get cluster server which runs even much more smooth.
    all the best dude.

Optimize all services, OS, network stack and then see if it can handle. Use data partitioning, load balancing, splitting database to another server etc - plenty of solutions you just need to know how to do things yourself - none will do it for free you know.

GoDaddy charges too much because it knows you don't know any better, you can find a better deal.

    Hi,

What type of site(s) are you hosting?

As recommended earlier I would say that the first thing you should do is figure out what you are using and where you need better performance. Once you figure out what you need to do to increase performance selecting the appropriate server or servers is not as hard.

If you cannot assess for yourself the performance issue you would probably do well to hire someone to do it for you. It will be worth the $50-100 if someone good does it for you.

I like to use some softlayer reseller. Usually, you get a better deal, like free xtra ram or free 2nd hd, plus server is monotored and managed.

    A great reseller is beachcomber.net

Pfft $500?? You might as well invest some money into buying your own server and internet connection, would be cheaper in the long run (if your site has a "long run"). But yeah, it's always worth investing in your own servers...

Absolutely not, I meant a dedicated server which runs for the sole purpose of hosting a website. www.webwombat.com is my dad's site and this has around 5-10 fully dedicated servers on which it's hosted (some in Australia, some in US). Costs around $5000 per server, but the profit is much, much, much higher than that :)

What are you talking about? In the post I quoted, you said buy your own internet connection, to which I said you should be colocating the servers if you're buying them.

Do you need any sort of management or can you handle that yourself? A lot of providers are unmanaged so you're completely on your own. If you do not need management than a provider like SoftLayer is great, they offer some high end machines and also have a solid infrastructure so down the road you could do things like load balancing without a ton of issues.
