Good. But always find another source of income. Dont ever focus on only one source.

No never. I don't quit from my job. Depend on Adsense is not a good idea. If your account get invalid click activities? We can't easily manage such cases. Therefore there is a risk IMO.

kinda weird question - my average month in the last 4 years wasn't exactly $10K, yet I never had a day job.

definitely a day job even if it pays $1000 - $3000 is still more secure than relying on the adsense income.

sites can get deindexed, lower rankings and so on.

Yes, the risk is that Google may ban your account. But you can anticipate and try to mitigate this risk. One possible solution is to have direct advertisers interested in your site. I'd suggest to use Google DFP to have the ads and monetize it with your own custom campaigns. This is also a professional way to manage ads, and I'd choose it besides OpenX (which is slow). This way, you can control your own ads and campaigns.

Of course, you may have relationships with other ad networks to have them as backup. Maybe you won't earn 10k anymore if your account is banned, but maybe you can still earnings 5k per month with other alternative solutions, or even more if you have your own advertisers and a quality traffic.

Another tip is that you may save your money in case something bad happens. For example, put 50% of your earnings in the bank and keep it as cash. In case your account is banned at least you will have a savings account to live for a few months (or years?) until you figure how to monetize the site again. Google is not the only solution to monetize.. we all agree, right?

I would like to think that I would, but I think its best to keep all options open incase something happens and adsense earnings plummit. For that reason I probably wouldn't quit in reality.

Serious? You will have to quit your dayjob way before you reach the 10k per month in 90% of all cases due to the work that is required to run a site making that much ;)

yes I would quit it, because even if you get banned, then you could use your time to work for yourself instead of a boss.
