If you don't update your site does Google drop you out of the top 100 listings ?

I have a blog , that I didn't quite recently updated ,almost two months with no new posts. At first it was on the 3rd or 4th page on google for certain keywords , now it's not even in top100. Is it because no update was made ? I must say that in this 2 months I posted my articles on a bunch of article directories and also focused on backlinks.
What could be the problem ? Can it be that by submitting my articles I duplicated my content and now Google doesn't like that?

Google likes websites with regularly updated, keyword rich content.

Furthermore, if you're a blog and you never update, you will never get return visitors, so you are giving yourself a huge negative outlook.

I totally agree with PokerVillian. Updating content not only keeps it fresh and interesting for your visitiors, it also helps with search engine rankings.

Like PokerVillain has already stated, Google likes a regularly updated website... that doesn't mean you have to update it constantly, but try to make changes as in adding a new article or changes keywords so Google will know that you have something different up.

Google like websites which are regularly updated but the regular update is not the
only factor that determines your ranking.
Yeah , updating regularly will help you improve your ranking but not updating regularly will not decrease your rank
may be you just loosed some good backlinks to your site or someone else did more SEO
    that you do.

Although updating content of a website is definitely recommended, I've seen many blogs which have not been updated for long time and improved in rankings even. So I would not associate your drop in rankings with the fact that you did not update content though.

    100 Positions?
They can even bury it under 1000 positions. Google hate non maintained sites.

I have a website that ranks on the first page of a fairly competitive keyword that I haven't touched in a year. I personally don't think it matters to Google if a website gets updated or not.

Is that website relatively unique? If so then maybe thats why it ranks so well?

google's competition when it comes to ranking are tougher compared to yahoo and bing.. google's ranking are based on the content and relevancy of your site to a certain keyword.. maybe that is why your blog drops..

Content is still king. Without useful and keyword rich content no use of site and google dont love these kind of sites.

It depends on competitors if your competitors are updating then you must update to fight with them! Otherwise there would be any other problem!

An updated site is good for the reader and the search engines. I have a site sitting in top the 5, beating out major banks, that has not seen an update in 5 months as far as content is concerned. So, not it is not required, but it probably would hurt.

It depends on your competitors websites and how competitive your keywords are. You can be dropped even you updated your website.
